Marta Moran Bishop’s Darkness Descends is powerful, gripping work! It’s a compelling, sometimes scathing prequel to her first series title, The Between Times. Set in a dystopian city-state, Bishop indicts a patriarchal oligarchy that feeds a rape culture at the same time as it plots the overthrow of the rule of law with the anarchic rule of a well-managed mob psyche. The Roman people were given bread and circuses. The crowds in Darkness Descends are handed Rebecca, Jewell’s mother, and a crucial charter character of the series, who faces public torture, humiliation, assault, and finally, auto-da-fé, burning at the stake, which she accepts as her fate as the ultimate sacrifice for a greater good. Bishop pulls no punches. The blows land all the harder when one realizes she is not working solely from imagination. She has incorporated into her literary tapestry the warp of today’s culture, with the weft of actual history, including a chilling early Twentieth Century plot by brutal American financial moguls to overthrow the United States government. Who knew?! This book is devastating. I’m praying for an uplifting third installment to arrive in my Kindle soon, but given Bishop’s dim view of humanity and history, I’m not holding out too much hope for a Pixar ending. Every win in Bishop’s world comes at a great price, and the brilliant Darkness Descends is no exception. Of course, I absolutely can’t wait to see what Bishop will come up with next! It makes you think “What if…….

I felt Marta out did here self when she wrote the prequel to Between Times, Darkness Descends. This story is about a young lady growing up into an adult who was born into two different cultures. These cultures helped get her through the hard times when she had to back in “Between Times” to get away from the brutality she was going through. This is all because she disobeyed the Order and wanted to teach children.
Darkness Descends makes you go through a lot of emotions: love, hate, loyalty, encouragement, anger, disgust and much more. I personally was drained after reading Marta’s book
It makes you think, “What if……”
Darkness Descends is not very long and you can read through the whole thing fairly quickly. Marta does an excellent job with this subject matter.

The people in the neighborhood called him Crazy Ed. He sat day after day on an ashcan in the alley staring at the dirty brick wall. Most didn’t know where he had come from or why he was there, but Ed was a quiet man with silver hair, and a sad expression on his face, so they left him alone. Few noticed him and most paid no attention what-so-ever to him.
Once in a while if a spare moment presented itself, they wondered who he was, until one day Ed disappeared.

Fluid, Charming and Bright

This is a small story of Ed. But more than love story of Ed and Isle, it is another vehicle created by Marta after the In Between Times which is meant to transport you to a different and hopeful world. While the story is to short for one to thoroughly enjoy the beauty of Marta’s writing, like Ed, we readers regret coming back to this side of the wall as the story ends. Enjoyable read.

November 12, 2052: Earth has lost two-thirds of its population to the Great War. Many more lives have been lost to earthquakes, the Clover Virus, and the Death Plague. Years later, survivors are clumped into factions. Two of those factions—the Brotherhood and the Guild Faction—have battled over medical supplies and food for years. The fight is coming to a head as manpower dwindles, and the struggle becomes one to gain numbers, even if said numbers are children…
Griffin Storm, an albino man kidnapped and dragged into the Brotherhood, has transformed into a G.O.D., a Genetically enhanced Omni-dimensional being. Two weeks in the brig, and Griffin’s released after it’s determined that he’s learned to control most of his god-like abilities. His abilities have grown almost as much as his love for Tassta Vinetti and his unfortunate bloodlust. His bond with Tassta’s twin brother, Penn, has grown as well and is cemented in secrets.
Not disappointed!
Griffin, having earned the trust of Fortress authorities, is set to be released from The Brig, much to the delight of Tassta, his sweetheart. Although Griffin still has a lot to learn about balancing his newfound abilities against his inherent humanity, overall he does well and has enough control over his abilities to prevent caving into his inner desires. As his and Tassta’s romance heats up, Griffin gets the horrifying news soon after his release, Griffin’s told that Guild agents and the notorious Trips (super-agents of the Guild) are in the Underground. He must now test his abilities to save the abandoned children that live there. Will Griffin rescue the children of the Underground from a tragic end? Will Tassta and Griffin’s love survive such turmoil? Can a G.O.D. forgive himself when death and destruction follow his every move? Read Blood Phase, the gripping second book in the G.O.D.s Series!

5 glowing stars from me!

Having eagerly read Blood Master, I simply had to read this story too, especially knowing how imaginative and emotional this author’s creative mind was likely to be. Her stories ooze with great insight into the dynamics between characters while her imagination is just on full throttle, adding so much essence to the plot.
The story is like a layered cake, with Griffin and Tassta’s romance simply added as delicious icing on the top for me…my goodness, I swooned. But, the romantic part did not distract me from the suspenseful segments of the story.
Just like in the Blood Master, the characters in Blood Phase are well-established and easily refreshed my recall of them so clearly in my head. Almost as if I was in the story, I got so caught up in it, and I was compelled by my urges to read the story until I finished it, with the sun slowly peeking over the horizon in the morning.
I can’t wait to read the next sequel!!! I hope they make a movie about this story…Imagine watching it in 3D! *swoons*

Sarah is a beautiful redhead who works for a special agency that fixes broken timelines and rescues historically significant people who are in trouble. She has a special set of skills that allow her to ‘tap’ someone out of a dangerous situation. Her present assignment is to find and rescue a prince whose son eliminates hunger and disease on his island nation.
“Save the Prince; save the King; and save the Reds. In doing so, Red Sarah may just save herself, who knows, but what might be the cost? Moving from modern-day wisecrackery to a time of romance long ago, Carol Ann Kauffman’s tale is filled with majesty and bravery. This time travel story is a gift for all.” – Amazon Review
“Sarah has one job, and that is to rescue Crown Prince Lucas of Mist from captivity in a dungeon. Yet everything is not as it seems and will Sarah be able to stop an upcoming war?
This was an interesting book about time travel and trying not to disrupt the time continuum. I liked Sarah, and it was interesting on where she and Lucas ended up.”

Astarte, grew up an orphan in the tribe and she had no recollection of ever having known her mother. From childhood, she could hear the silver ringing of the music of the fairies as they twirled in the moonlight below the caves. She saw them dancing, the fireflies glittering in and around them, adding a shimmer of gold in the moonlight.
Why could no one else see them? What made Astarte different than the other children of the tribe? Why did discontent fill her soul at the idea of moving with the tribe and leaving the fairies behind and why did the idea that she would be required to marry into one of the other tribes when she reached her majority scare her so much?

An engaging, whimsical tale!

‘The Night of the Fairies’ couches in fantasy an enchanting short story that touches upon a theme of identity – ‘Who am I?’ and ‘Where do I belong?’ – the resolution to these questions is a delightful surprise.

An orphan in her tribe, Astarte is different, both in body and in mind. At night when others in her tribe are asleep, Astarte remains awake to view a group of fairies that no one else in her tribe can see or hear. Captivated by this amazing sight, Astarte’s innate longing is to join in with the fairies. At this point, the author added a bit of intrigue to the story that captivated me: the girl’s stronger pull to leave the tribe is concurrent with unusual changes going on in her body.

Ms. Moran-Bishop captures superbly the inner discontent within this girl child who senses she does not belong. The author also poignantly touches upon a happenstance that occurs all too often in real life parenting situations: well-intentioned elders try to calm the child yet do not question her as to what is going on or listen to what she has to say.

‘The Night of the Fairies’ is an engaging, whimsical tale that pulled at my heart.

Dr. Laura Martin, Chief Extraterrestrial Life Scientist at The Touchstone Institute of Oceanographic Research, noticed troubling but subtle changes in the Atlantic Ocean. Before she could make sense of it all, her longtime assistant abruptly walked out. Laura hired young, handsome Scott Conner to be her personal assistant. Mayhem ensued, mainly because of Zara, the mermaid/siren/monster in the basement of the Touchstone Institute, who eyed on Scott as her possible mate in a plot for total domination of planet Earth.
“The Touchstone Institute of Oceanographic Research is the most fantastic, exhilarating place on the planet to work. It is high energy, exciting, sometimes maddening, often frightening, heart pounding work. It’s not a job. It’s a lifetime commitment. It gets in your blood. It grabs you by the throat and possesses you, body and soul. And it is work. If you’re not prepared to work your ass off day in and day out, weekends, holidays, your birthday, and your mamma’s birthday, leave now.”

By Gerald L. Guy

The ocean always has intrigued me, probably dating back to the first time I opened a Jules Verne novel and stepped aboard the Nautilus. Now that I live in Florida, my fascination has become reality. Carol Kauffman’s “Sea Witch” brought me a step closer to the mermaids and the oceanic secrets I have chased my entire life. This is a magical journey into the unknown. “Could it be?” the reader asks repeatedly. The author expertly blends romance with science fiction to woo and entrap the reader. The end comes too soon. I long to discover what is next for the fearless Dr. Laura Martin and the devoted Scott Conner.

I loved this story so much! However, it ended way too soon, I wanted to see them reunite and help the people (Indians). Why couldn’t you have made it longer? Authors do this quite often, and it saddens me. But I will read this story over again often, you can count on that. Any who read this wonderful story needs first to read the first book in the Wilderness series. If you don’t, you will miss so very much that will help you understand book 2. Enjoy reading both as I have.
