Another great Carson Reno story!Carson is now on the other side of the law, or at least that’s the way it looks. It’s a great new story for Carson, and full of unpredictable twists and mysteries. I am a big fan of Darnell and of course, Carson, so I was very excited to read this new story. It’s one of my favorites of the series, but of course, Carson is one of my favorite characters. It’s a hard-hitting, magnificent bout of storytelling. Couldn’t put it down until the end!

An Endless Pain

This is an absolutely fun and darkly funny short story. It becomes clear almost immediately how bad the misery has been for this poor man and the insanity he’s been driven too. This is definitely a 5 stars plus, and I recommend it highly to all.

Laura and Gerry are at it again. Death finds them close to home when a tenant is found in the dumpster behind their apartment building. Laura is thrust into the “who killed Denny?” mystery while she does battle with a tenant and dodges a school janitor. The life of a college student is never boring, but she wishes it would be!
Dead Men Don’t Swing is a biting, funny, deliciously bawdy and fast-paced murder mystery in which “death by sexual misadventure and a wayward poisonous snake” (among other things) make for pure entertainment gold.”

The “corpse magnet” is back!

Dead Men Don’t Swing is Karen Vaughan’s bawdy, comedic take on amateur sleuthing. It’s book four in her Laura & Gerry Mystery series. Lots of detective lingo is delivered with wit and sarcasm by the protagonist, Laura. That’s not surprising if you’ve read Vaughan’s previous books in the series, and given the fact that the author has done a bit of stand-up comedy.

In this book, Laura and her husband Gerry are back dealing with another murder investigation since, as Laura explains, she’s a ‘corpse magnet.’ This time a dead body turns up in a dumpster at the apartment complex where Laura and Gerry are managers, having fallen to his death from the balcony above. Not likely an accident—the guy is wearing boxer shorts and sporting a tricked-out stiletto in his forehead. Oh yeah, he’s missing some sensitive body parts—yikes!

Things are not as they seem in this suburban Canadian apartment complex. It turns out there’s a whole lot of hanky-panky going on in this mid-rise Peyton Place, some of it pretty kinky stuff, too. There’s no shortage of pervs and perps on any floor, in addition to the ever-annoying, tenant-from-hell, Stella. As I type the name, I hear Marlon Brando screaming it at the top of his lungs in A Streetcar Named Desire. And, speaking of movies, the photographer played by Jimmy Stewart in Hitchcock’s Rear Window, would have been hard-pressed to know where to shoot first with all the action going on in this complex!

All Carson Reno, Mystery Series Books, are standalone novels. It is not necessary to read them in any particular order.
The witness protection program had simply not worked as promised. He and his wife had been relocated to a one-horse hick town in West Tennessee, with a promise to start life over – on the right side of the law, this time.
His factory job lasted less than a year. A strike and major labor dispute had cost him his job – and his running around with other women had cost him his wife. He never intended for any of this to happen, but it seemed he was meeting failure at every turn. He had made that difficult move from the underworld to the real world with all good intentions of making it stick – it wasn’t working. Things were dragging him back, and he was finding it too easy to drift into the dark side of life once again.
He knew that if he crossed back over, all chances and opportunity for a life in the real world were over – his one chance gone forever. While he resisted, it just didn’t seem to matter – circumstances were taking him back – he couldn’t stop himself.
He started by renewing some old contacts, asking the right questions and finally by offering his services for hire. It didn’t take long for things to happen, and contract offers coming his way.
They started with a call from Anthony ‘Tony’ Scarsetti. He had worked for Tony in the past, and he believed they held a mutual respect for each other – him for his skills and Tony for his leadership. Tony was a rival of Steve Carrollton, and their competition for the vices in Memphis and on Beale Street was well known. Evidently, Carrollton had been temporarily sidelined – but his operations continued. Tony was looking for some professional help to make his temporary situation a permanent one.
Once again in his life, things were looking up, and he was feeling good about himself – being useful. His skills were needed, and he would again be a contributor. His little house on Mullins Avenue, in this hick town of Humboldt, would also be useful. Quiet, out of the main activity in Memphis, and allowing him to operate under the radar. Besides, the government had bought it, why not put it to good use?
He would start by sharpening the skills that had once made him successful. After all, failure was not an option in this business – only death. Hours in the local forests and woods would give him the privacy required – he had the perfect set-up and the perfect location. Nobody local to challenge him, and besides, if someone did – he was still the best at what he did. Everybody knew that.

Well written and fun to read.

As a native of the real town that is the setting for most of the Carson Reno adventures, I probably get more involved than the casual reader of mysteries. But, aside from being able to actually remember the locations in the book, the stories are logically devised and well written. Carson, as chronicled by Gerald, is fun to follow.

Who doesn’t love a paranormal romance series?
By Steph Destiny
Reviewer of 2 Girls Book ReviewsCrescent Vendetta is the first book of a very promising paranormal series called Vendetta. I must confess I love this genre, but this book is the cherry on the cake. The author built us a plot so believable and characters that are easy to relate to. I assure you that it doesn’t matter if we are talking shifters or not, you will be living every part of the plot with them without feeling the plot was forced. That, just by itself, is amazing and a true accomplishment. This story deals with a lot of topics such as romance, betrayal, violence and almost every hardship you can never imagine. Nevertheless, every piece of the novel is put together in such a way that it doesn’t feel exaggerated. I loved how two, unlike characters, found everything they needed to heal in each other.
This book makes you think about everything one must deal with their life. We see faces that we never thought would hurt us but the truth is that there is evil lurking around every corner, but there is also light, hope, and happiness awaiting us. This story is full of self-growth, acceptance, and tolerance when it comes to our hero and heroine and it really touched my heart. I highly recommend this novel to any paranormal romance fan that loves to have some suspense, action, and a lot of drama in the mix.

Fabulous read

Karen has brought to life once more Laura and Jerry. I have read all but one of Karen’s book, and I really feel this one and last are so good. She brings her characters alive, so I feel I know them. Also, I sure would like to meet them. When I find an author that can make me feel like I am there with the lead characters, I feel the author has done her job. I hope Karen will keep writing about these characters. She also is a very special person and hopes one day to meet her. We play a lot on pogo, I hope people will join me in encouraging her to keep writing.

Indie Ebook Uprising

Wow! What a great read. “Dead End,” throws the reader back in time to the 1960s to follow the wild and unpredictable adventures of Carson Reno, private detective. Through a complex and exciting story, Gerald W. Darnell manages to illuminate the debaucherous cunning of classic gangsters as well as the dedicated heroics of the people hired to catch these crooks. The opening is enthralling, and the ending is unforgettable; definitely grab a copy today.
Darnell also asserts the fact that his Carnon Reno books are all PG rated, so feel free to pass them on to the young ones.

Highlights!

Chase scenes: there are too few car chases in thrillers these days, but “Dead End,” delivers all the twisted metal and nervous speed you can handle.

Side characters: the extra folks in this book are multifaceted and compelling.

Series: this seems like a strange positive note, but “Dead End,” is the thirteenth book in the “Carson Reno,” series. Thirteen novels and still awesome is a massive achievement.
