Short, but worth the read
The worst part of this book? It is too short. Just as we have been getting things developed in the characters, the locations, the relationships, the author cuts off the story. Much like a Saturday Matinee… See you next week!! Uggg…
The story is basic Zombie Outbreak with introductions to the main characters, the history of the area and what is happening now. Add a few standard plot devices and viola, instant story. Now, this isn’t to say it’s like all the others, there is enough to make it fresh and worth the time to read. I am sure to pick up any and all books in the series as they become published.
All in all, a great ride, not too much gore, a touch of romance here and there, oh, and Zombies.

“Killer Among Us” (Carson Reno Book 3) by Gerald W. Darnell – #Mystery, #Thriller, #Suspense, #CrimeFiction, #Crime

Ger killer among us

Line Blurb
All Carson Reno, Mystery Series Books, are standalone novels. It is not necessary to read them in any particular order.
The witness protection program had simply not worked as promised. He and his wife had been relocated to a one-horse hick town in West Tennessee, with a promise to start life over – on the right side of the law, this time.
His factory job lasted less than a year. A strike and major labor dispute had cost him his job – and his running around with other women had cost him his wife. He never intended for any of this to happen, but it seemed he was meeting failure at every turn. He had made that difficult move from the underworld to the real world with all good intentions of making it stick – it wasn’t working. Things were dragging him back, and he was finding it too easy to drift into the dark side of life once again.
He knew that if he crossed back over, all chances and opportunity for a life in the real world were over – his one chance gone forever. While he resisted, it just didn’t seem to matter – circumstances were taking him back – he couldn’t stop himself.
He started by renewing some old contacts, asking the right questions and finally by offering his services for hire. It didn’t take long for things to happen, and contract offers coming his way.
They started with a call from Anthony ‘Tony’ Scarsetti. He had worked for Tony in the past, and he believed they held a mutual respect for each other – him for his skills and Tony for his leadership. Tony was a rival of Steve Carrollton, and their competition for the vices in Memphis and on Beale Street was well known. Evidently, Carrollton had been temporarily sidelined – but his operations continued. Tony was looking for some professional help to make his temporary situation a permanent one.
Once again in his life, things were looking up, and he was feeling good about himself – being useful. His skills were needed, and he would again be a contributor. His little house on Mullins Avenue, in this hick town of Humboldt, would also be useful. Quiet, out of the main activity in Memphis, and allowing him to operate under the radar. Besides, the government had bought it, why not put it to good use?
He would start by sharpening the skills that had once made him successful. After all, failure was not an option in this business – only death. Hours in the local forests and woods would give him the privacy required – he had the perfect set-up and the perfect location. Nobody local to challenge him, and besides, if someone did – he was still the best at what he did. Everybody knew that.

Well written and fun to read.
JonJTN
As a native of the real town that is the setting for most of the Carson Reno adventures, I probably get more involved than the casual reader of mysteries. But, aside from being able to actually remember the locations in the book, the stories are logically devised and well written. Carson, as chronicled by Gerald, is fun to follow.

It was supposed to be a vacation, a time to save her marriage, but what Joan Clayton hadn’t counted on was Murphy’s Law of Vail Mountain and the secrets that had damaged her marriage beyond repair. It was over. Depressed and angry, she decided to venture directly into an oncoming snowstorm, one that would be known as the blizzard of the century.
Stephen Brockheart received the call concerning a missing tourist after working 26 hours straight. A park ranger for the mountain resort, he set out on the routine mission, knowing he was running out of time as the blizzard hit with visibility zero. What he hadn’t counted on was saving a beautiful woman and falling for her, a city girl who knew nothing about the dangers of the mountain. He had been there before and vowed never to return.
As Mother Nature raged, Joan was soon overcome by the feelings a complete stranger evoked in her, causing her to reevaluate her own life. Through the blizzard and stranded at the resort, death was imminent for any who would try to leave. Despite loss and secrets, can two people find love and happiness again?
Can they be given a second chance to make it real and lasting, or will that chance die with them?

Light the fire, grab the cocoa, and get ready for a great read!
By Eilish Hawes-Fraser
Stranded on Vail Mountain is a well-written, gripping, fast-paced novella. I love short reads, especially those who grab the reader by the seat of the pants from the first line to the last – this one delivers! I’ve read this story twice and will read it again. This was my first read of this author’s works.
I look forward to reading much more from her. I don’t write reviews often, but some stories are too good not to share.

Terrific short story
By Sarra Lord
Terrific short story. Interesting premise with believable characters. Lettie isn’t particularly sympathetic she’s a little too much of a schemer, but one can certainly sympathize with her plight. Corletta or Lettie grew up in Bethnal Green in a working-class family, and she doesn’t want to end up a drudge like her mother. So she plots and schemes her way into marrying a man who she thought would raise her station in life but in reality not much changes. She comes up with a plan… I don’t want to give away any spoilers I’ll just say in the end she works hard and ends up with what she wants and thinks she deserves plus a little extra. The story was well crafted to draw the listener in, and the narrator was excellent. Her accent was the perfect touch. I requested a review copy of this on Audiobook Boom received a free copy in return for the promise of an unbiased review.

Another Suspense-filled Carson Reno Story!
By Amy’s Bookshelf Reviews
Who doesn’t love a good PI book? Darnell did not disappoint in this story, as he kept the Carson Reno true to himself. Dead Ends is filled with suspense and thrilling action. The characters have a great connection and chemistry, and Reno doesn’t always believe what he is told. That’s the PI in him. This one is a real page-turner, so much that you end up re-reading pages because you are so anxious to get to the next page, but fear you have missed something important. As part of the series of Reno mysteries, it’s not required to read the others, but this book makes you want to go back and read about Reno’s other cases. I have read “Murder and More” and will probably go back and read others when I have the time. I like the point of view from Reno, reminds me of old detective movies, the ones in black and white, with the narration at every turn. Love this book!I received this book free in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. ~Amy’s Bookshelf Reviews

The plot of the story was like a roller coaster
By Eric W. Morrison
I thought this novel was outstanding. The plot of the story was like a roller coaster, it went up and down, and you never want it to stop. As I was reading, the characters felt like family, and I cared about every one of them. I would recommend this series, and I can’t wait until the part two comes out.

Right from the start, you know you are hooked!
By Ann Stanmore

Right from the start, you know you are hooked! I mean how many people wake up to find a body had been delivered to their sitting room while they slept?

This is a good mystery with some romance thrown in. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Karen Vaughan has created a great character in Laura Hamilton. She is funny, smart with a wacky sense of humour – you just have to love her! Will she be able to find out who put the body in her apartment? Who actually was the killer? There isn’t a dull moment in this book, more like a roller coaster of ‘events’ to keep you guessing what comes next!

There are lots of surprises throughout, and it certainly makes you keep turning the pages. Altogether a great book, a definite to be recommended.

All Carson Reno, Mystery Series Books, are standalone novels. It is not necessary to read them in any particular order.
The year is 1962 and Carson Reno, once again, gets himself into situations that would be better left alone. A Memphis client hires Carson to prove infidelity, but instead, he finds corruption and murder going all the way to the top of Memphis politics. A Jack Logan client investigation takes him back to Humboldt looking into automobile fraud, which lands him smack in the middle of a murder. Not just any murder, but the murder of a local beauty queen – one who seemed to have too many enemies for a girl her age.
