Once Upon a Time… Prince Christophe can’t die. Or, more precisely, if he dies, so does his country. But that hasn’t stopped the King from hosting a ball. And it hasn’t stopped Kit’s enemies from seeking a quick end between the quadrille and the waltz. The Children of the Wood hold out hope that their Assassin Queen will fulfill the prophecy and end Kit’s life. But when Ella vies for the prince’s attention, it’s not a knife that pierces his heart or her own. One waltz at a ball. One trip of a slipper. One Prince. And one Assassin. In the world of the Never Lands, Fairy Tales aren’t quite like you remember.

Fantastic twist on Cinderella

This is not the Cinderella Disney told us about. You have a charming (ha) prince, whose primary concern is the future of his people. You have a beautiful, mysterious girl whose primary concern is to assassinate the prince. There are no distressed damsels in Charming, only kickass lady assassins, complicated political drama, and a prince who wants what’s best for his people and the future of his kingdom. Charming is a wonderful beginning to the (very) complicated love story of Eli and Kit, with a fantastic world and engaging characters. Highly recommend!

Sesame, an old woman in frail health, is trapped in the attic with no explanation. A woman and her two small girls live on the first floor, none of whom pay the old woman any mind. Though she tries calling out, banging on walls, and stomping on the floor, her cries for help go ignored.

Sesame spends her days writing letters about the strange happenings, to her sister, Eula, who left home decades ago. It becomes certain to everyone living in the house that there is a ghostly presence, firmly rooted among them; disturbing the peace and creating fears beyond reason. The house surely is haunted. Only the ending reveals by whom.

This is a short story but long on creepy. I loved it. Deryn Oliver was the perfect narrator. I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.

There once was a castle in the woods, claimed by a terrible Beast…

I was a simple girl, living a simple life of clothes and needles, never seeking adventure, glad to dress those who did. But the world is full of magic, and spells never let rest those caught in their thorns.

A rose by any other name…

The tattoo on my hand was dying, the petals falling faster and faster. All because of the curse within the trees, and those held in its thrall threatening to break free.

What would you give up to save those you love most? What would you risk facing in the Darkness of the Woods?

My name is Amarice. And this is my Tale.

So Sweet

Who but a Beauty can Judge a Beast?

The Keeper of the Memories
Bishop gives us the story of the tribe and its Memory Keeper. The Old Mother must soon pass from the world, and she chooses Mondoani to take her place. She must care for her people in their harsh land. The tribe and its land is painted with care, and their story is crafted with care. The people live lives that to us are exotic, and their traditions and way of life are alien. The reader sees a life that entices him into a new world and time. Well done!

No one knows what came first, man or dragon, but throughout history, man feared the great fire-breathing beast, terrified of its breath and its claws. Man ran long and far from the winged serpent until he came to a land rich and fertile, green where the dragon’s lands were blackened with the ash of its fire.
The dragon didn’t follow.
Until now.
She was out picking fruits to see her people through the winter months, innocent in her adventuring, never expecting to come upon a beast in the woods, one so great and mighty he was more myth than reality.
He frightened her, and in her fall, he saved her life.
Why would a creature, reported to be the very basest of evils in the world, stop to save the life of a girl he didn’t know? Couldn’t care about?
How could she not return the favor when his life came into question by her people?
Ciandra, Daughter of the Darkness, Elf of the Forest.
Trinigon FyreBreath, the Great Red Dragon.
A forbidden affair that could cost them their lives, but how can they say no when the Dragon’s Sacrifice has no fear of the flames?

Great short story with a unique twist.

If you are a fan of the twilight zone, you need to pick up the many books by Michael Bussa. He is a storyteller with a mind that is a bit twisted but in a delightful way. Step into ‘Antiques by Lora’ a special gift shop. That’s what Tony Price did and now his life will never be the same. The author takes readers on a great journey into the macabre in such a great story with a fantastic twisted ending. As always, grabbing a book by this author is like settling down and telling horror stories in front of a raging fire with an old friend and always well worth that trip.

Who was after her and how did they seem only a half step behind them as the two flee?

The Binding kept me wondering. Merideth and Ryder meet at her mother’s funeral. She’s feeling guilty for not spending more time with her mother and the way their last visit ended. Ryder didn’t know her mother but his father did and was a close friend, or so he said. No one had ever seen them together and she hadn’t spoken of him. When the man and her own father agreed that her mother’s death may be foul play Ryder was assigned to protect her.

Who was after her and how did they seem only a half step behind them as the two flee?

There is an attraction between these two never-gonna-get-in-another-serious-relationship people. Neither wants to admit it even though they come close a few times.

While I did enjoy the book, I was unable to care about Merideth. Her better-than-you attitude was off-putting. Ryder was easier to like, however, with the mystery not allowing us to delve into their personalities too closely it wasn’t easy to be on their side. I did enjoy the story and if you are looking for an interesting mystery with a couple and little steam this will fit the bill.

“The Between Times” (Jewell in the Dark, Volume II) by Marta Moran Bishop – #Horror, #Occult, #ContemporaryFiction

Marta jewell in the dark 10-22-18.jpg

Line Blurb
In the days when the corporations rule the world. The middle class is gone, and the cities are divided into upper and lower towns.
The upper towns are domed to protect the rich from the foul air that permeates the world, from the waste that fills the air, and fumes that blacken the sky from the smokestacks of the factories. The water is heavily rationed in the lower towns and barely drinkable, so fouled by the chemicals that fill the rivers and springs.
While in the upper town the water is purified even in the fountains and swimming pools that grace the world of the high and mighty. The shops, boutiques, restaurants, and museums are crowded in the upper town, music can be heard everywhere, and the flowers grow tall and beautiful.
While the people of the lower towns work six days a week, in sixteen to eighteen-hour shifts. There one day off is Sunday, it is then that the men and young boys must be found in the church, while the women and girls are kept at home, for they are considered to be beasts for breeding and less important than the animals that grace the zoos of the upper towns. Food is scarce in the lower town, and the only market is the company store.
The world has stepped back into the dark ages. Nearly all hope is gone to those not born into wealth and only the prophecy that one day a young woman will come who can control the magic of the between times keeps the poor going. It is said she will be able to pull on the energy of all those who are of like mind, wrap that energy together and send it into the world to remake it.
Marta Moran Bishop takes the reader through a possible future. Unlike Orwell’s, Animal Farm and 1984, or Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, The Between Times is not based on the government ‘Big Brother,’ but rather it is written using a recent ruling by the Supreme Court that says corporations are people. In The Between Times, we are shown the possibility of a world where the poor are considered to be a beast of burden, good only for the labor they can produce or the war they can fight, to enable the war profiteers to make more money.
Poor women are used for breeding and considered to be the property of men and the corporation. There is no way for the uneducated and isolated poor, move up the latter, for the middle class is gone.
In this short novel, The United States had taken a social, economic, and cultural step backward, to a time when our world consisted of lords and serfs. The only thing that keeps those who are not in the ruling class of the elite, going is the belief in a prophecy, that one day a girl will be born who will have the ability to unite all kindred spirits past, present, and future, to bring change to the world.
A truly amazingly imaginative book.

The Between Times are NOW!
Marta Moran Bishop’s The Between Times is a terrific allegory–until the sucker punch. You think you’re reading a dystopian story set in some future time. Then you suddenly realize Bishop is writing about right now: The Between Times is a period in which we still have a chance save all we hold dear. Fail to marshal our collective powers, and we fail as a society, a culture, as a nation-state, and the beacon to the world that America has always been being snuffed, never to be reignited. Penned with all the visceral indictments of Sinclair’s The Jungle, we admire and pity Ben, fear for Jewell, grieve Roxanne and loathe Mr. Horton and his kind. There is a cliffhanger ending that made me need to know more. Will the uprising in The Between Times save us? This series would make fascinating movies.

There was a time before Prince Christophe was born when the worst fate his people had to worry about was war with their troll neighbors or an invasion from elfin forces beyond the woods. But that was before he was born and was cursed.
If he dies, so to do his people.
Such a simple phrase, so oblique, and yet Kit has lived his life in fear of the prophecy, searching every shadow for assassins come to get him.
Until she came and took up arms in his defense.
Warrior and witch. Assassin and priest. She was his teacher and his protector. His friend. The only woman ever to run from him at the end of a ball, and the only woman he ever asked to stay.
But Eli is an outsider in the human world, and trusted only so far, even by the man who desires more from her than her skill with a blade. The longer she remains with him, the more she falls for her prince in a world where her prince’s life is the fate of his lands.
As the time of the prophecy draws near, Eli and Kit will face more than dwarves and shadows to find solace with each other and salvation for their people.
Sometimes the one most suited to protect you is the one who holds the sharpest blade.
And there is no sharper sword than:
The Captain.
