“The Between Times” (Jewell in the Dark, Volume II) by Marta Moran Bishop – #Horror, #Occult, #ContemporaryFiction

In the days when the corporations rule the world. The middle class is gone, and the cities are divided into upper and lower towns.

The upper towns are domed to protect the rich from the foul air that permeates the world, from the waste that fills the air, and fumes that blacken the sky from the smokestacks of the factories. The water is heavily rationed in the lower towns and barely drinkable, so fouled by the chemicals that fill the rivers and springs.

While in the upper town the water is purified even in the fountains and swimming pools that grace the world of the high and mighty. The shops, boutiques, restaurants, and museums are crowded in the upper town, music can be heard everywhere, and the flowers grow tall and beautiful.

While the people of the lower towns work six days a week, in sixteen to eighteen-hour shifts. There one day off is Sunday, it is then that the men and young boys must be found in the church, while the women and girls are kept at home, for they are considered to be beasts for breeding and less important than the animals that grace the zoos of the upper towns. Food is scarce in the lower town, and the only market is the company store.

The world has stepped back into the dark ages. Nearly all hope is gone to those not born into wealth and only the prophecy that one day a young woman will come who can control the magic of the between times keeps the poor going. It is said she will be able to pull on the energy of all those who are of like mind, wrap that energy together and send it into the world to remake it.

Marta Moran Bishop takes the reader through a possible future. Unlike Orwell’s, Animal Farm and 1984, or Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, The Between Times is not based on the government ‘Big Brother,’ but rather it is written using a recent ruling by the Supreme Court that says corporations are people. In The Between Times, we are shown the possibility of a world where the poor are considered to be a beast of burden, good only for the labor they can produce or the war they can fight, to enable the war profiteers to make more money.

Poor women are used for breeding and considered to be the property of men and the corporation. There is no way for the uneducated and isolated poor, move up the latter, for the middle class is gone.

In this short novel, The United States had taken a social, economic, and cultural step backward, to a time when our world consisted of lords and serfs. The only thing that keeps those who are not in the ruling class of the elite, going is the belief in a prophecy, that one day a girl will be born who will have the ability to unite all kindred spirits past, present, and future, to bring change to the world.

A truly amazingly imaginative book.

The Between Times are NOW!Marta Moran Bishop’s The Between Times is a terrific allegory–until the sucker punch. You think you’re reading a dystopian story set in some future time. Then you suddenly realize Bishop is writing about right now: The Between Times is a period in which we still have a chance save all we hold dear. Fail to marshal our collective powers, and we fail as a society, a culture, as a nation-state, and the beacon to the world that America has always been being snuffed, never to be reignited. Penned with all the visceral indictments of Sinclair’s The Jungle, we admire and pity Ben, fear for Jewell, grieve Roxanne and loathe Mr. Horton and his kind. There is a cliffhanger ending that made me need to know more. Will the uprising in The Between Times save us? This series would make fascinating movies.

Infidelity, partying, and drugs was a musician’s mandatory lifestyle. Candiss Ford thought dating a rock star was insane; she believed every cliché attached to them. Then she met Eclipse lead singer NiXX Williams…After proposing to Candiss, NiXX meets an aspiring model named Farren Wade, who offers the rocker something too tempting for him to resist. During a chance meeting, Candiss learns of the relationship between her fiancé and the model. Thinking that’s a typical, inevitable occurrence in NiXX’s circle -rockers and models coupling- she decides she’d rather feel the heartache now, and sets NiXX free to be with the woman she believed he preferred: the lovely Farren. NiXX is left wondering if he’ll ever call the woman he loved, MINE.

Falling in love with his partner’s little sister was never part of the plan.

There was an order to James Marsden’s future: get a job as an Indianapolis cop, work his way up to detective, and then find a nice girl and start a family. He never planned on walking into a diner his first day as a rookie copy and for her to blow his entire timeline to smithereens.

When Marie Griffen’s older brother Steve introduced her to his new trainee, she was instantly drawn to his shy demeanor and blushing face. Only, she couldn’t act on her feelings even if she wanted to. Steve wanted her to date someone with a normal job – that wasn’t his partner. Marie just wanted to live her own life without her older brother watching over her.

Marie and James must decide if this off-limits romance is worth the risk or if the consequences are too much for either of them to bear.

5 Sweet Stars for Loving Marie

If there is anything remotely negative to say about this one it would be that it is too short. I have loved James and Marie in all the Fairfield Corners books, and adore this tease of how they met. In other words, I want more! 😉

This is fantastic through and through. If you are not familiar with the rest of the series, this can definitely stand alone and can also stand as a great introduction to the series. It’s a quick read, but sweet. It sets the tone for the future of the series, though this one is set in Indianapolis rather than the quaint Fairfield Corners.

This is a clean, sweet read and highly recommended.

THIS ONE IS RYANNE’S BEST!
I loved everything about this one, and I want more! There’s a huge surprise in here that I WON’T spoil but it shocked everything in me to read it. I had no clue this book was going there. Kaia and Martin and Bobby are the perfect triangle. That Martin needed. His ass whipped for his mess! Bobby was on my bad list for a minute, but he pulled it in. The part where she confesses something to Bobby had me confused, but soon I realized that she did do something horrible to him first. It took me a second because I can be thick at times but yeah, I saw her wrongdoings too. This is a great read, and I really have no clue why Ryanne Anthony isn’t more famous. Can’t wait for her next book!!!!!!!!

Kimber wanted to be a lawyer almost as much as she wanted Roland Sampson, her older brother’s best friend. After pining for him for two years, Kimber finally accepts that to Roland, she will always be “his best friend’s kid sister,” and nothing more.
During her first year of college, Kimber meets Samantha and her twin, ultimate bad-boy Jaxen Malloy, drummer for Negative Ion. Tatted. Muscled. Beyond gorgeous. Soon Kimber finds herself forgetting Roland and thinking only of Jaxen, much to Samantha’s disappointment. Like Kimber’s brother, Samantha wants Kimber as far away from Jaxen, female enemy number one, as possible since she knew all Jaxen would do is viciously hurt her. Not this time, Kimber insisted. Well-schooled on Jaxen’s reputation, Kimber decides to take what she can get, and ignore all the warnings to stay away from the handsome bad-boy.
Will Jaxen ever think of Kimber as something other than his “annoying” sister’s friend or was he falling for her, too? Kimber hoped so and, to find out, she was willing to take the risk of Jaxen breaking her heart… and soul.

A Nonstop Read

I have found myself a new author to follow. Where do you start with a book like this? First, I had to walk away for a bit after the ending…I was so upset. (I know, get a life, right?!) But that is how you feel when an author pulls you into to their story so much that you are left wearing your feelings on your sleeve. Ryanne took you through all the emotions; laughter, sadness, and with the ending, anticipation for the next book to follow this.

Ms. Anthony did a great job writing about the various characters in this book because the storyline was not just about Jaxen and Itsy, even though they were the main characters; you were taken into the two families that were involved as well. I really loved the storyline for Itsy’s mom and dad.

Falling takes you down the path of a virgin and what it means to have the right person to give it up to. Or so you thought. Ryanne did a great job writing this because I felt cheated on right along with Itsy. Itsy knew that in order for her to give up her virginity to someone she would have to love that person. Is it possible that the person will be someone that you actually have crushed on for a couple of years and thought they never felt the same way? And how do you love someone and know that you will be leaving them in a few short weeks? Is the love that Itsy is feeling enough to get her to change her mind and stay behind for her man? And what happens when you wait too long to tell someone of your true feelings for them? Ok, enough of the dramatic questions!

This book was a killer because not only did it keep me reading through it nonstop, it left me wanting for the follow up to be ready NOW. Believe me; it will not come out soon enough! This is a great read for anyone looking for a story that will pull you in and make you feel invested in the characters. The same desperate feeling I had that kept me reading through this book nonstop left me feeling desperate to find out what is going to happen next with Itsy and Jaxen. (Sorry Roland)

I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.

Could not put down!!
By M. Thompson (Chelle)

WOW!! I am in complete shock! I was not expecting that ending at all. That completely threw me for a loop. Okay, I have to say I absolutely loved this book and instantly fell in love with the characters. From the first page to the last, I was so wrapped up in the story I literally read the whole book in one sitting while at work only stopping to when I actually had to work. As soon as I finished whatever I had to do, I was right back in the story. Ryanne Anthony writes an amazing story that just sucks you in and just when you think you know what is going to happen, think again, she throws a twist at you. Definitely, an amazing read and I cannot wait until I can read the next one.
