“A Story about Horses, Humans, Cruelty, and Hope” – Dinky: The Nurse Mare’s Foal by Marta Moran Bishop

Marta dinky

Line Blurb
Winnie Award Winner at the Equus Film Festival. Best Equine Rescue book.
Dinky: The Nurse Mare’s Foal is the story of one little foals fight for survival after being taken from his mother within hours of his birth. Dinky, takes us on a poignant trip through the heart and mind of an animal, who was born for the sole purpose of producing milk in the mare. In the elite world of horses, Dinky was considered a by-product, a ‘junk foal.’
Dinky’s story will resonate with animal lovers, as well as anyone who has adopted it. Although a horse, his story has been called an adoption story. The reader can follow him through the heartbreak, cruelty, loneliness, and finally to happiness in his forever home. His story is based on true events. Each event from the moment the author met Dinky actually happened, though it is the author’s interpretation of what he might have been thinking and feeling during the occasions described in his story. His early life which is unknown has been fictionalized by the author and constructed through research and imagination.
There are many wonderful animal rescue leagues, many are very empathic to these young animals, though some are not. Since Ms. Bishop has no knowledge of Dinky’s early days, she used the latter to enhance the strength of his story.
It will break your heart, open your eyes, lift you up, and teach you much about horses. It is suitable for all ages.

A Story about Horses, Humans, Cruelty, and Hope

This is the second book I’ve read from Marta Moran Bishop. In Dinky: The Nurse Mare’s Foal, Bishop explores the real and dramatized history of her real-life foal, Dinky. The horse was born to a nurse mare, a horse that is mated for the sole purpose of keeping a supply of milk for high dollar foals. Dinky was taken from his mother and denied a normal upbringing for the sake of profit. It’s a heartbreaking tale about how humans exploit these creatures and the effect the practice has on the horses themselves. As with other books by Ms. Bishop, this book is steeped in drama and contains harsh realities couched within the story. It makes you think about horses, humans, and humanity in general. I loved this book. It was eye-opening for me and made me re-think the horse industry. If you enjoy a deeply emotional story that leaves you with a sense of hope for a better future, you’ll love Dinky.

“In Book Two of THE BETWEEN TIMES author, Marta Moran Bishop shows the power of standing together” – The Between Times (Jewell in the Dark, Volume II) by Marta Moran Bishop

Marta the between times.jpg

Line Blurb
In the days when the corporations rule the world. The middle class is gone, and the cities are divided into upper and lower towns.
The upper towns are domed to protect the rich from the foul air that permeates the world, from the waste that fills the air, and fumes that blacken the sky from the smokestacks of the factories. The water is heavily rationed in the lower towns and barely drinkable, so fouled by the chemicals that fill the rivers and springs.
While in the upper town the water is purified even in the fountains and swimming pools that grace the world of the high and mighty. The shops, boutiques, restaurants, and museums are crowded in the upper town, music can be heard everywhere, and the flowers grow tall and beautiful.
While the people of the lower towns work six days a week, in sixteen to eighteen-hour shifts. Their one day off is Sunday, it is then that the men and young boys must be found in the church, while the women and girls are kept at home, for they are considered to be beasts for breeding and less important than the animals that grace the zoos of the upper towns. Food is scarce in the lower town, and the only market is the company store.
The world has stepped back into the dark ages. Nearly all hope is gone to those not born into wealth and only the prophecy that one day a young woman will come who can control the magic of the between times keeps the poor going. It is said she will be able to pull on the energy of all those who are of like mind, wrap that energy together and send it into the world to remake it.
Marta Moran Bishop takes the reader through a possible future. Unlike Orwell’s, Animal Farm and 1984, or Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, The Between Times is not based on the government ‘Big Brother,’ but rather it is written using a recent ruling by the Supreme Court that says corporations are people. In The Between Times, we are shown the possibility of a world where the poor are considered to be a beast of burden, good only for the labor they can produce or the war they can fight, to enable the war profiteers to make more money.
Poor women are used for breeding and considered to be the property of men and the corporation. There is no way for the uneducated and isolated poor, move up the latter, for the middle class is gone.
In this short novel, The United States had taken a social, economic, and cultural step backward, to a time when our world consisted of lords and serfs. The only thing that keeps those who are not in the ruling class of the elite, going is the belief in a prophecy, that one day a girl will be born who will have the ability to unite all kindred spirits past, present, and future, to bring change to the world.
A truly amazingly imaginative book.

“This story is told with great detail, making the reader apart of the story.” The Void by Marta Moran Bishop

Marta the void

Line Blurb
The Void, the first true paranormal short story written by Marta Moran Bishop, is reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock or the Twilight Zone of later days.
It will take you deep into the mind and heart of someone either living through a serious mental illness or something mysterious and dangerous resides in the void.
Many years before, Altori and her sister Helen moved into the village. Last year during the night of no moon Helen went out into the void and nearly died. A terrible disease spread through her body. She ran away to escape the possibility of death at the hands of the frightened villagers.
Will Altori survive the void and find her sister? Did Helen ever exist or is Altori suffering from a mental illness?

This is a fantastic read.

I must admit, I don’t read that much due to my work life and all the writing that I do, but when I do it’s great to read a short story that captures your imagination.
This story is told with great detail, making the reader apart of the story. Now that’s what I call a fantastic author. Any author who can get into the mind of a reader, making you turn the pages, I class that as pure talent. I do look forward reading more of Marta’s work. I would like to wish Marta the very best, but I know deep down we will be seeing a lot more of this author  ❤

A fun story with good, thought-provoking messages

“Algernon” is a cute story about an anteater who loves ants of any type or size until he accidentally discovers chocolate covered ants in a jar. The problem was, he didn’t know where to find more of them. Algernon was quite clever and creative. He decided to brush up on his reading skills, hoping that would solve the problem of where to find more of his favorite chocolate treat. One day, Algernon discovers the circus is in town. Thinking that would be a fun adventure, he discovered some skills he thought could be included in his circus act. The story will help children with imagination, problem-solving and more. No doubt they will cheer for him throughout the story. Highly recommended

“The tale is told from the point of view of an aging mare, whose main function appears to be breeding foals” – The Nurse Mare’s Tale by Marta Moran Bishop

Marta the nurse mares tale 7-2019.jpg

Line Blurb
The Nurse Mare’s Tale is in a way the prequel to Dinky:
The Nurse Mare’s Foal, as it tells the story of Dinky’s mother.
This lovely story is told from the viewpoint of two aging nurse
mares about to give birth, and the trials they go through. It tells
us of Sadie and her friend Nellie and is accompanied by
charming dialogue (both speaking and thinking). The plight of
these animals is described in empathetic detail.
After enduring years of breeding and loss, the older nurse mares
must face the auction with the promise of being slaughtered, as
they have become too old for breeding and thus unable to be
rented out as nurse mares to feed the foals of the high-dollar
mares.
Do they accept their fate, or will there be another ending for the
nurse mares that have given everything and received little in
return?

Nurse-Mares-Tale of Dinky’s Mom

This story about the past and present treatment of horses will appeal to all animal lovers and especially to horse aficionados. The tale is told from the point of view of an aging mare, whose main function appears to be breeding foals and then feeding them milk until they are big enough to take them away – or to use her milk to feed other, more marketable, foals. From the viewpoint of two horses, Sadie and her friend Nellie, with accompanying charming dialogue (both speaking and thinking), the plight of these animals is described in empathetic detail. This lovely story portrays two aging mares about to give birth, and the trials they go through to give birth and protect their newborn babies. The reader is drawn into the story, culminating in the wonderful escape coup the mares plan, and are able to carry out, to gain their freedom and find a new life.
The symbolism of the conclusion, where Sadie is renamed Angel and given responsibility for becoming a nurse mare for her new owner’s motherless foal, brings the circle around as the new owner proclaims, “We all need jobs. It makes us feel important.” (The story is also somewhat of a subtle allegory of today’s world, where many females are considered no more than breeders and have to live in a male-dominated world. Although in this world, at least the fillies are considered worthy, unfortunately mainly for their ability to provide milk to newborns. On the other hand, in this world of selective breeding, newborn colts are often considered “junk foals” and left to die. So the story also questions the reasoning behind why some horses are considered to be more valuable than others.)
Those of you who have previously read and enjoyed the author’s “Dinky, The Nurse Mare’s Foal”, will love and appreciate this prequel.

In Book Two of THE BETWEEN TIMES author, Marta Moran Bishop shows the power of standing together

Author Marta Moran Bishop is someone I have followed for quite some time, her books have a way of not just tugging at your heart but getting you to think as well. In Book Two of THE BETWEEN TIMES, we see the results of people being divided, pitted against one another by greed and personal agendas—-and we see individuals like Jewell willing to risk it all to make a difference.

The book takes us into the darkness of the world for sure, showing us how things could take an even worse turn, but we are reminded that each of us has the ability to stand up for what we know to be right—and we are not alone. Jewell realized that herself, and though it can be scary the alternative is even worse.

Full of messages that do the reader well to consider when it comes to the choices we make and the impact we’re having on the place we call home, THE BETWEEN TIMES: The Divide is our call to unite before it’s too late.

Marta Moran Bishop’s DINKY shows the reader that all life is valuable

If you have had the pleasure to spend any time with Marta Moran Bishop you know that she is a lover of life. That is true in the way she treats humans as well as animals. The story of Dinky is one that should give all of us pause, and since Marta allows us to see the world through Dinky’s eyes we are able to realize just how important all life is.

To know that some consider life easily expendable once it has served its purpose is difficult enough, but imagine being the one looked at as being worthless and less than. How would you feel knowing that to somewhat you have to offer is more valuable than your life? Through Dinky the Nurse Mare’s Foal we see Dinky handle life in a new environment and how some saw him worth saving and wanted to help him survive and thrive.

The book is entertaining but it’s hard to read it and now think what if Dinky was a human being. How would you feel in that situation? Would you give up or do all you could to live a healthy happy life.

Showing the flaws of the world that we live in while also reminding us of our opportunity to showcase our humanity this book reminds the reader that all life is valuable—it’s just up to us to see it. 5-star review from Cyrus Webb – he ranks 250 in Amazon top reviewers
