Marta Moran Bishop’s Darkness Descends is powerful, gripping work! It’s a compelling, sometimes scathing prequel to her first series title, The Between Times. Set in a dystopian city-state, Bishop indicts a patriarchal oligarchy that feeds a rape culture at the same time as it plots the overthrow of the rule of law with the anarchic rule of a well-managed mob psyche. The Roman people were given bread and circuses. The crowds in Darkness Descends are handed Rebecca, Jewell’s mother, and a crucial charter character of the series, who faces public torture, humiliation, assault, and finally, auto-da-fé, burning at the stake, which she accepts as her fate as the ultimate sacrifice for a greater good. Bishop pulls no punches. The blows land all the harder when one realizes she is not working solely from imagination. She has incorporated into her literary tapestry the warp of today’s culture, with the weft of actual history, including a chilling early Twentieth Century plot by brutal American financial moguls to overthrow the United States government. Who knew?! This book is devastating. I’m praying for an uplifting third installment to arrive in my Kindle soon, but given Bishop’s dim view of humanity and history, I’m not holding out too much hope for a Pixar ending. Every win in Bishop’s world comes at a great price, and the brilliant Darkness Descends is no exception. Of course, I absolutely can’t wait to see what Bishop will come up with next! It makes you think “What if…….

I felt Marta out did here self when she wrote the prequel to Between Times, Darkness Descends. This story is about a young lady growing up into an adult who was born into two different cultures. These cultures helped get her through the hard times when she had to back in “Between Times” to get away from the brutality she was going through. This is all because she disobeyed the Order and wanted to teach children.
Darkness Descends makes you go through a lot of emotions: love, hate, loyalty, encouragement, anger, disgust and much more. I personally was drained after reading Marta’s book
It makes you think, “What if……”
Darkness Descends is not very long and you can read through the whole thing fairly quickly. Marta does an excellent job with this subject matter.

The people in the neighborhood called him Crazy Ed. He sat day after day on an ashcan in the alley staring at the dirty brick wall. Most didn’t know where he had come from or why he was there, but Ed was a quiet man with silver hair, and a sad expression on his face, so they left him alone. Few noticed him and most paid no attention what-so-ever to him.
Once in a while if a spare moment presented itself, they wondered who he was, until one day Ed disappeared.

Fluid, Charming and Bright

This is a small story of Ed. But more than love story of Ed and Isle, it is another vehicle created by Marta after the In Between Times which is meant to transport you to a different and hopeful world. While the story is to short for one to thoroughly enjoy the beauty of Marta’s writing, like Ed, we readers regret coming back to this side of the wall as the story ends. Enjoyable read.

Astarte, grew up an orphan in the tribe and she had no recollection of ever having known her mother. From childhood, she could hear the silver ringing of the music of the fairies as they twirled in the moonlight below the caves. She saw them dancing, the fireflies glittering in and around them, adding a shimmer of gold in the moonlight.
Why could no one else see them? What made Astarte different than the other children of the tribe? Why did discontent fill her soul at the idea of moving with the tribe and leaving the fairies behind and why did the idea that she would be required to marry into one of the other tribes when she reached her majority scare her so much?

An engaging, whimsical tale!

‘The Night of the Fairies’ couches in fantasy an enchanting short story that touches upon a theme of identity – ‘Who am I?’ and ‘Where do I belong?’ – the resolution to these questions is a delightful surprise.

An orphan in her tribe, Astarte is different, both in body and in mind. At night when others in her tribe are asleep, Astarte remains awake to view a group of fairies that no one else in her tribe can see or hear. Captivated by this amazing sight, Astarte’s innate longing is to join in with the fairies. At this point, the author added a bit of intrigue to the story that captivated me: the girl’s stronger pull to leave the tribe is concurrent with unusual changes going on in her body.

Ms. Moran-Bishop captures superbly the inner discontent within this girl child who senses she does not belong. The author also poignantly touches upon a happenstance that occurs all too often in real life parenting situations: well-intentioned elders try to calm the child yet do not question her as to what is going on or listen to what she has to say.

‘The Night of the Fairies’ is an engaging, whimsical tale that pulled at my heart.

“A Poet’s Journey” (Sunlight and Shadows) by Marta Moran Bishop – #Poetry, #American, #Regional&Cultural, #UnitedStates

Marta Moran Bishop continues her journey in Sunlight and Shadows. This book of poetry, unlike A Poet’s Journey: Emotions, is a more thought-provoking book. In its pages, she covers everything from God, to life after death, war, and the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. Still, she is able to bring to life the beauty and grandeur of her surroundings and make us laugh, cry, think, and feel.
Sunlight and Shadows will once again, take you on an emotional journey through life.
I believe it is how we deal with despair, tragedy, and joy that define us as human beings.

A raw peek inside an intimate dichotomy

Through this collection, Marta Moran Bishop gives the reader a raw peek inside the intimate dichotomy a victim of abuse must endure until they are able to process. Marta takes the entanglement of love and hates abuse manifests, and through the rhythm of her words, she unwinds her confusion. In a completely unadulterated tone, she smooths the drama and unselfishly shares the gift with others, a priceless gift. Her gift is without restraint through her beautiful poetry. This book is a deep reflection of a victim, a survivor and a beautifully empathetic human being that has risen above the perpetrators of the past and found beauty in people, nature, and animals. I so admire Marta’s ability to share her deepest and most intimate feelings and experiences while at the same time recognizing obstacles others encounter that are not hers personally.

From a heart wrenching abusive experience, a salute to soldiers, an inclusive look at God and a tree sleeping…this is a wonderful labor of love any poetry reader will appreciate.

Keeping The Upper Paw: A Cat’s Guide To Training Your Human, began with scraps of paper that were found lying around the house. It is a humorous look at life through the eyes of a cat.
All of the cats in this book were once a part of the family, cohabiting together in the household of, Ms. Moran and Ms. Bishop.
Morris, the elder cat, Beau, his second in command, Kitten a cat who liked to get physical, Poofie, a small gray boy, who dreamed of being an only cat, Champ, the shy one, Mikey the playful boy, Sheba, the only girl, and Little Bit, the baby all lived, played, and trained their humans.
Both Ms. Moran and Ms. Bishop, have described their part in this book as merely the typists.

KEEPING THE UPPER PAW THE CATS GUIDE TO TRAINING YOUR HUMAN, PATRICIA MORAN AND MARTA MORAN BISHOP

These felines have it going on. Join these cats as they expound wisdom of how to keep their humans on the right path. From cat boxes to playtime the house cats cover mostly everything, but I can see a sequel in the future with new tricks and tips to keep us humans in line. My cat JJ took note and will probably use some of these methods on her human dad and me. It was well written with a sense of humor and from the cat’s point of view. A recommended read for all cats and humans alike. I give it 5 paws for an entertaining read.

A short story.
One hot summer evening in Chicago, we went on a Ghost tour on Lake Michigan. Afterward, we were invited back to Mike’s house which was once owned by Al Capone and was haunted. This is the story of my experience in the house that hid, for that house did not care for unexpected visitors.

Poetry that induces a rich and enlivening read…
By Dodester

The poems in EMOTIONS convey the author’s views about nature, love, relationships, life and death. My usual preference is to read novels and memoirs yet, after my read of the author’s real-life story, ‘Dinky: The Nurse Mare’s Foal,’ I found myself gravitating towards her poetry.

The poetry in EMOTIONS is poignant; the flow of words in each poem induced in me a rich and enlivening experience during my read. Although many of the poems are validations of Ms. Bishop’s personal emotional roller coaster ride due to her life’s experiences, it often felt as if the author was writing about my own. I resonated deeply with “Fire Within,” “Invisibility” and “Lessons of Life”– each triggered vivid memories and gave me pause to reflect on aspects of my own journey through life.

The poems in ‘Nature’ took me into a place of nostalgia, moments when I took more time to pause and listen to the world around me. The poetry in the category, ‘Silly Me,’ took me back into childhood; they are simply delightful.

“Death I Am Not Afraid” and “Life’s Miracles” are two that especially resonate with the person that I am today.

Innocence and Wonder, like Wee Three: A Mother’s Love in Verse, is written from the perspective of a child and is full of verses that range from bugs, dogs, pigs, and nature. It is a terrific book written to charm and enthrall the child in all of us.

Ms. Bishop has once again produced a book to entertain those of all ages and help us see the world as a place of wonder and joyful simplicity.
If you enjoyed Shel Silverstein, you will surely fall in love with Innocence and Wonder.

“The Void” by Marta Moran Bishop – #Horror, #Occult

Marta Animated GIF-downsized_large.gif

Line Blurb
The Void, the first true paranormal short story written by Marta Moran Bishop, is reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock or the Twilight Zone of later days.
It will take you deep into the mind and heart of someone either living through a serious mental illness or something mysterious and dangerous resides in the void.
Many years before, Altori and her sister Helen moved into the village. Last year during the night of no moon Helen went out into the void and nearly died. A terrible disease spread through her body. She ran away to escape the possibility of death at the hands of the frightened villagers.
Will Altori survive the void and find her sister? Did Helen ever exist or is Altori suffering from a mental illness?

Rings supernatural story-lovers’ chimes
By Dodester

This story is reminiscent of the old Twilight Zone episodes, reminding me of the reason they were fascinating. It was the author’s portrayal of the characters’ psychical layers within the story that captured my interest.
When the dark moon-night phase is complete, a night with no moon – the void – occurs. Bad things happen to anyone caught outside during this time – it did to Helen, and she disappeared. Wrestling with her despair over a life of drudgery as an outcast, made worse by the loss of her sister, Altori makes a bold decision. Determined to discover the truth about Helen’s disappearance, she goes into the void for answers and risks the terrible ravages upon her body that will occur.
Altori’s choice is to stay the same – invisible and miserable or step into the void. To make a choice for change, she must transcend fears, trust in her intuition and go through a phase of pain. There is no guarantee she will survive much less discover the answers, the better life that she seeks.

The Void is a psychologically compelling story that integrates themes important for the transcendence of a person from a sense of littleness to one of confident self-worth. I enjoyed the paranormal element; it is the transformational, however, that made the story so interesting.
