What a good read!

Mari Collier is a masterful writer, character creator, and storyteller. This is my first of Mari’s full-length books (I’ve read all her “Twisted Tales” books and loved them), and it won’t be the last. From her startling beginning to her brilliant ending, I enjoyed the story of an amnesia-stricken man who crash lands on a foreign planet. Yet, some things seem strangely familiar to him, and he seems to know something about surviving in a foreign land. It’s not until the very end that we discover his origins — at the same time that he does. The book is fascinating in its descriptions and I followed with interest what happens. I highly recommend you read this! Mari ROCKS!

While technically the third book in the series, Marika is actually a standalone novel, so people like me who read it without reading the first two books will have no problem understanding what’s going on. What I really liked about this book is the world-building: the way the author brings this alien world to life is fascinating. I also liked the main character, who grows right in front of your eyes while she finds the truth about her past and figures out her purpose. I was fascinated with the story and found putting the book down difficult, but lucky for me I read pretty fast and managed to finish it in one sit. Highly recommended for SF fans, but personally I think there is enough love story in there to keep fans of multiple genres happy.

A work of exceptional talent

The love story of Marika and Dickon will ring in my mind long after the Star Shifts are over and the book comes to an end with the haunting final words.

21st-century science can indeed explain the catastrophes that overwhelm the planet Tonath at irregular intervals when space/time shifts. Although the previous novels in this series must better explain the lineages and genealogy of the aliens with two hearts, Marika stands alone as a work of exceptional talent.

As Brother Amos grows to be the Teacher for all of Tonath, he must stand against the heresies of the Silver Institute in Anoth and the Green Institute in Greenland.

Jack Donald has returned to his birth planet, but cannot find proof of long ago documents. Venta Strauss struggles to provide a haven for the poor, and Grant Vidal is the Green Marauder, accustomed to taking what he wants.

These are the three people who struggle to find their way in a new part of their world. One will become the new Teacher, one will rescue the older, destitute women on the planet, and one will give his life to save the others. The leaders of the Mechams use the Silver Institute to spread their version of the Star Paths, and the Greenlanders use the Green Institute to spread their version.

This means there are fights, wars, raids, love triangles, and people fighting to survive.

AWESOME READ

The Silver and the Green by Mari Collier 5 stars
This is a very interesting fantasy tale about another world, one that has a similar weave to the 17th or 18th centuries of our own world. Relationships develop out of a need to survive. Journeys of escape ensue. Troubles grow between different groups each with their own beliefs about what is the real truth. Lots of excitement, surprises and tense moments. An excellent read.
