I really enjoyed this well-written book. The storyline is very different and inventive. I was hooked from the very beginning. My only complaint is that it ended too soon. There has to be a sequel so I can find out if Nathan really goes back to sea. I received this as an ARC.

Completely different sort of story
By BeverleeSo
This was nothing like any Regency Romance I’ve read before. The tale – of a Scottish girl raised in Polynesia and kidnapped into an Algerian harem – kept the pages turning. The characters were fascinating and nuanced, and the insight into life not so far from the genteel salons of Europe was quite an eye-opener. With love, politics, intrigue, deceit, action, and adventure all riding the waves, this is certainly a great choice for anyone looking for something slightly off the beaten path.

Well-researched, excellent read. ARC (Reviewed for Romance Reviews Magazine UK)

By Francine Howarth
Life in a Harem and the practices defined as part of life within a Sultan’s palace is unacceptable and sexist for 21st-century thinking. Thus the era in which Joanna Thomson’s novel is set, it is nonetheless a safer place than most for those sold into slavery, and a strict hierarchy exists, and woe betides anyone who breaks the rules. Strange as it may seem, women within Harems of the Ottoman Empire stretching to the Barbary Coast, had more rights and power than most European women had within marriages, so sayeth the renowned English aristocrat Lady Mary Wortley-Montague, who stated in one of her 18th century letters: “The Turks govern their country and their wives govern them. In no other country do women enjoy themselves as much.”

Be assured the author has researched her subject matter in depth, right down to names for individual items of clothing worn by women of the Harem, and of a south sea island maiden, though the true heritage of Sarah and the colour of her hair sets her apart from other women, just it had for another who arrived at the Harem and is thus presented to Naa’il Dhar. Throughout the beginning of the novel two stories of two women run parallel and finally merge as one, and yet neither woman meets the other. Whilst Naa’il is the central pin in their respective stories aside from the swashbuckling hero Hassan, Naa’il is a man of his time and his religion, wealthy and powerful, and yet his faith is tested, just as the hero’s faith and belief he can rescue the woman he loves is tested.

Hassan Aziz’s existence as a Barbary pirate is key to knowledge in how to achieve his aims, but the fact he is not what he seems is also reliant on betrayal of those closest to Naa’il. This is a fascinating novel of south sea island innocence, treachery, lust, and love, the kind of love that comes once in a lifetime if a man is lucky, and both Naa’il and Hassan are driven to acts that astound both in their own way because of two women. So alike is Sarah to Cora, an American captive; Naa’il’s conscience plagues him for his unjust treatment of both women who refuse to submit and embrace his religious dictate. Although I mention love and lust, this is a historical novel combined with romance, and the novel is not a steamy read in the vein of eroticism. The characters are well-rounded, their faults exposed, and the punishment of slaves and concubines, or favoured wives who deceive, can be realistically harsh. All told this is an enlightening read with hints at how one person’s religion can give cause for another to doubt their own.

An epic love story on the Barbary Coast

This is an epic love story set on the Barbary Coast in the time of Pirates better known as Cosairs. If you love to be transported to another time and place, with all the needed detail supplied for you to feel like you are there – do not miss out on this.

An exotic beauty with very little command of English, Sarah is in a difficult position to help her father when their ship is attacked by cosairs. The captain is immediately taken with Sarah, and the rest of the crew are shipped off to be sold as slaves to the Dey of Algiers.

The second part of the story is set in Algiers. The Dey is a powerful man and a devout Muslim. The life in the harem is quite set in its ways. When two American women arrive as captives, the Dey makes a decision that alters his life and the lives of those around him in more ways than he could have thought.

The way that everything is set about and linked together makes this book a joy to read. I received this book for free and voluntarily reviewed. Yes, it is rather long, but it is set in a time and part of the world that needs details explained. I hope book number two of the series will be available soon!

Josanna Thompson has a win with her debut novel
By Kathleen O’Connor
A Maiden’s Voyage is a rare treat. Sarah is raised by her Scottish father in the South Seas. She thinks of herself as an Islander and shares the simplicity and joy of her sunny world. She is forced by a cruel twist of face to discover who she really is when she is captured by Barbary pirates and finds herself in the harem of the Dey of Algiers. Beautifully researched and rich in details of a world rarely seen, Sarah’s story is one of courage, friendship, betrayal, and faith. The supporting cast of friends and enemies she meets including the dashing naval officer she falls in love with makes for a story that lingers long after you have finished the book and yearn for more in the promised Book 2.

Adds a welcome new dimension to the more standard depictions of the Regency era
By C D Kaye
The Barbary Coast, 1814. Perfect new female slaves are to be sent to the Sultan, imperfect ones the Dey of Algiers may add to his own harem. Beautiful, red-haired Sarah Campbell, daughter of Scottish missionaries and brought up in Polynesia, would be a welcome gift to any man. Corsair Captain Hassan Aziz encounters Captain Gerard Rochelle’s ship too late to prevent the murder of Sarah’s father but yields to the dying man’s plea to save his daughter from slavery by marrying her. Rochelle will not be thwarted and determines to re-capture this prize. American cousins Cora and Abigail have also ended up in the Dey’s harem, as have Irishwoman Tess and her daughter. The Dey is not unchanged by his encounters with these infidel women while Hassan Aziz has his own secrets. As Sarah struggles to come to terms with a new life far away from her beloved island, she finds herself threatened on all fronts.
The author does not balk at describing the absolute power of the Dey and the harsh regime of the harem, nor does she shut her eyes to the evils of the Barbary slave trade. All in all, she adds a welcome new dimension to the more standard depictions of the Regency era while cleverly weaving an intricate plot for her cast of characters. A Maiden’s Honor is subtitled Book 1, The Woman from Eden Series and I look forward to Book 2.

5-star reviewThe history woven into this story is amazing! It’s worth the time and money to read.
By Nancy Dillow
This story is quite complex, but, there is so much description of the people, times, and places, that you can almost imagine being there. There is a major character, Sarah Campbell, who was born and raised in the South Seas. Her parents were Scottish, but, Sarah considered herself as pure Polynesian. A corsair ship captures Sarah and her father with the intent to sell her at the slave market in Algiers on the Barbary Coast. Her captor and protector, Hassan Aziz is between a rock and a hard place, as he tries to keep her with him because of his feelings. There is a subplot interwoven – two cousins – Abigail and Cora. They have been given into the custody of Naa’il who is the Algerian Bey. Naa’il has been told that one of the girls is a virgin and the other is not. Because Cora offers herself up to save her cousin, the Bey decides that she is the impure one, and treats her accordingly. And then the plot thickens.

When cultures clash – an epic 19th-century adventure
By Amazon Customer
A captivating and most unusual story set during the Napoleonic wars: the whole world is on fire, and people from various cultural spheres get mixed up in the most unbelievable adventures. Like Sarah, who is of Scottish origins but grew up on a remote island in the South Seas; she and her father embark on a journey to Scotland, but the ship’s captain has got other plans: he poisons the father in order to sell the beautiful daughter into slavery on the Barbary Coast. She is in turn kidnapped by Algerian pirates, though, and the pirate captain, who turns out to be a Brit, falls in love with her – but then she is captured by the Dey of Algiers, who wants to add her to his harem…
In a really thrilling way, this book shows us how cultures clash, how people from different societies and religions have enormous difficulties in understanding each other. The most striking example is the young heroine: her parents were both Scottish, but she grew up integrated into a Polynesian island society; she doesn’t even speak proper English because she never bothered to listen much to her father’s lessons – she had no idea she would ever have to leave her island. Then she gets to know and love the British pirate and tries to understand the Western way of living and thinking – and a little while later, she gets thrown into a North African harem!
Intricate character portrayals and vivid descriptions of all the harem intrigues and the political schemes of the time make this book a real page-turner. A must for all fans of historical romance!
