Another Suspense-filled Carson Reno Story!

Who doesn’t love a good PI book? Darnell did not disappoint in this story, as he kept the Carson Reno true to himself. Dead Ends is filled with suspense and thrilling action. The characters have a great connection and chemistry, and Reno doesn’t always believe what he is told. That’s the PI in him. This one is a real page-turner, so much that you end up re-reading pages because you are so anxious to get to the next page, but fear you have missed something important. As part of the series of Reno mysteries, it’s not required to read the others, but this book makes you want to go back and read about Reno’s other cases. I have read “Murder and More” and will probably go back and read others when I have the time. I like the point of view from Reno, reminds me of old detective movies, the ones in black and white, with the narration at every turn. Love this book!

I received this book free in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. ~Amy’s Bookshelf Reviews

The year is 1962 and this small west Tennessee town has been turned upside down by a labor strike at its main manufacturing plant. It seems that, as a result of the strike, some very serious underworld crime problems have surfaced in Humboldt. A small-town sheriff and small-town Chief of Police have their hands full dealing with the strike – when the worst happens – one of the principal figures surrounding the labor problems is murdered.
Carson Reno is very familiar with Humboldt – after all, he grew up and went to high school there. But Carson has a successful private investigation business in Memphis and no desire or reason to get involved. However, circumstances pull him into the turmoil and a situation that grows more dangerous every day. By trying to not become involved, he becomes deeply involved and ultimately the prime suspect for the Murder in Humboldt.

An awesome read!

“Murder in Humboldt is a true mystery from cover to cover. Just when you think you know who the killer is, there is a twist and you are left scratching your head….wondering….a real “Whodunit”. Being from Humboldt, I loved that I knew the places that “Carson” went. A good read!

An ex-Memphis cop and a friend of Carson is in trouble – but what kind of trouble?
While trying to answer that question, Carson finds more questions – and all with no answers.
What Carson also finds is trouble coming from all directions. The Mafia, the Teamsters Union, an unhappy sheriff and some very rough characters are all looking for his friend, and Carson is in the middle of this mess.
An apparently senseless murder only complicates Carson’s problems, which makes getting to the truth more difficult.

A Fresh YA Mystery!

Carson is in the middle of all kinds of trouble as he grapples with a senseless murder.
This is the first Gerald Darnell book I have ever read. With the kiddies out of school for the summer, I have been looking for creative YA books and this definitely made the list.
Reelfoot would appeal to mystery fans and probably any young adult who burns through Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys!

Felt Right at Home at the Peabody!

‘Murder My Darling,’ Book 17, and the third Carson Reno novel I’ve read—delivers the goods! In this case author Marlow Darling’s tell-all diary. Important enough to get her murdered, and detective Carson Reno implicated in hers and that of the boat captain of ‘The Lusty Lady’.
A fan of Reno and the early Sixties from which he operates the Drake Detective Agency on the first floor of the Peabody Hotel, I loved tooling around with him, Joe, and Lydia. Whether they’re contemplating their next moves at the Down Under or following up a lead at Chief’s Motel, it’s a wild-goose chase to find the bad guys amongst a motley assortment of characters with creative names such as Lefty Then right, Ben Dover, Three Smith, and Primo Pitt.
Even though Carson Reno has only 48 hours to clear his name of murder, he’s the same ‘ol: cynical, snarky, irreverent, and chauvinistic. Leave it to him to stare at Flo’s assets while on duty at Chief’s, wearing her traditional, pink uniform with fake handkerchiefs on the upper left shoulder.
If you like your Crime/ Mystery, Thriller & Suspense stories hard-boiled—any one of the stand-alone Carson Reno books will tickle your fancy: Fast-paced plots, sinister twists, suspicious characters, snappy dialogue, and time-warped technology and attitudes. I guarantee you’ll feel right at home at the Peabody.

Severed Finger!

The Black and White pictures mixed in with the story is classic! The Jack Daniels, the butcher knife, and the severed finger. Darnell’s style of writing, along with the sparse photos, paints a vivid picture in my mind and keeps me turning the pages. I’ve read one Carson Reno book before this and have to admit I am hooked. I don’t think Gerald Darnell can top this Reno Carson story. If you are going to read a Reno Carson, this is the one!

Darnell Keeps the 60s Breathing With a Little Help from Private Detective Carson Reno

A detective mystery set in the 1960s with an authentic feel of the 1960s. The book could so easily have been written then rather than in 2015. The read is nicely scattered with illustrative pictures from the period, which I can see adding a lot to the reading experience of those born later. I felt that I could be reading a period Mickey Spillane novel; the script felt that authentic. I’d even say that there are more than a few similarities between Mike Hammer and Carson Reno— well at least as how I remember the character. Then again, possibly Reno is a more James Garner in the Rockford Files TV series. Okay, that was very 1970s scripted, but the Rockford character could have been slotted seamlessly into any ’50s/60s detective series. So then, for me, Carson Reno is possibly best described as a blend of Mike Hammer and Jim Rockford.
The writing has a sharp journalistic economy, never burying us in irrelevances and keeping a brisk pace. Some of the bit players are easy to confuse, but that problem is relieved by the index of characters. This is the first Darnell book I’ve read. Love it. I can see this series of books on every paperback turntable in front of every ’60s newspaper store. The mass market paperback days are, generally speaking, history, but that shouldn’t limit the availability and popularity of Darnell’s Carson Reno. This book is an object lesson in how to get that old paperback buzz into the e-market. For those still addicted to traditional paper, the lovers of the smell and feel of ‘pulp’, for those that still have or are discovering vinyl records and classic cars, the hands-on version looks just as 60s slick. The period will always be culturally cool and so will Carson, with bourbon and coke and an after-dinner cigar.
This is a mystery detective novel, not a voyeuristic trip through violence and death, as so many modern genre books are. A read that may seriously damage your place in time.

Masterfully done again.

This is my second Carson Reno novel. Besides the fact I enjoy detective stories and the ‘whodunit’ of this genre, Author Darnell, makes it a pleasurable & enjoyable read in the manner he ‘pulls you’ into the settings. Couple that with vivid characters, and you have another winner, which I enjoyed from start to finish.
