Someone is brutally murdering people in Memphis, and for unknown reasons, the killer wants Carson involved.
They’re not just killing people, they’re removing the victim’s fingers and leaving strange clues everywhere. Carson becomes involved when the killer sends him severed thumbs – each wrapped in bloodstained paper containing Bible scripture.
Clues are everywhere, but none of them make any sense and aren’t connected – yet.
Old names surface and the mystery gets stranger and darker as Carson tries to solve the ‘Fingerprint Murders’.

Severed Finger!

The Black and White pictures mixed in with the story is classic! The Jack Daniels, the butcher knife, and the severed finger. Darnell’s style of writing, along with the sparse photos, paints a vivid picture in my mind and keeps me turning the pages. I’ve read one Carson Reno book before this and have to admit I am hooked. I don’t think Gerald Darnell can top this Reno Carson story. If you are going to read a Reno Carson, this is the one!

All Carson Reno Mystery Series Books are standalone novels. It is not necessary to read them in any particular order.
In 1962 the quiet, and seemingly innocent, activities at the Humboldt Motel in this small West Tennessee town went unnoticed and unchallenged. Besides, a little booze, a little gambling and maybe an occasional ‘lady of the evening’ never hurt anyone, right?
Then one fall night after a football game, things began to come apart. It seemed that everything was not how it should be, or at least, how it appeared.
Unfaithful housewives, a football coach fixing game scores, a crooked private detective and eventually a murder, would bring exposure to ‘SUnset 4’. And that was something its operators didn’t want.
Carson isn’t involved in the investigation, but it seems everyone thinks he is. Protecting a friend, he tries hard to ignore things that are simply not right. Finally, he follows instinct and tackles the innocent and the guilty in ‘SUnset 4’.

An exciting Carson Story!

Yes, I love reading Darnell’s work. I also love, and I mean love, Carson Reno, and was very excited to read this one. First, what I like about any of Darnell’s Carson Reno’s books is the way that writes it so anyone can pick up any volume of his multitude of books and read it. But, once you read it, you end up wanting more. Lack of Candor was no different. Reno is on a new and interesting case, and nothing is as it seems. I like how Carson tells his story and what happens, especially his thoughts about himself and the others around him. It makes for great storytelling. The story was thrilling, and though plot-driven, the characters, were what makes for the remarkable and exciting story. I like that he introduces a cast of characters, so much that I’ve taken that idea from him with my own work. An edge-of-your-seat, savor-every-word, page-turner!

Another great Carson Reno mystery

I haven’t read all of the Carson Reno books, however, I did read the last book in the series and really enjoyed it. I was really glad to have been given a chance to read the next book in the series and this one didn’t disappoint either.

What I enjoy about these books is that despite them being set in the 1960s, they don’t read like that. Darnell gives his books and writing a fresh feel to them and readjust as highly as any top-notch crime/thriller book written in our current time. The books are always fast-paced and have plenty of going on to keep you hooked throughout. I would definitely recommend this series to anybody who likes a good crime read. I am definitely looking forward to reading the next one!

I realise this is a quick review but what can you say when there’s nothing negative and a complete five star rating! This was a fantastic read and something I will keep recommending.

“Carson Reno is the best detective in the world!” – Horse Tales (Carson Reno Mystery Series Book 4) by Gerald W. Darnell

Ger horse tales with gun

Line Blurb
All Carson Reno Mystery Series Books are standalone novels. It is not necessary to read them in any particular order.
It was a disaster beyond most people’s comprehension.
There was nothing left standing of the barn, it had burned completely to the ground. Among the rubble and smoking wood, you could see the smoking corpses – which had once been some of the finest thoroughbred stallions in the Tennessee and Kentucky area.
Unnoticed, among these ruins, were the burned remains of Aaron Nunamaker, owner of ‘Nunamaker Stables’, and one of the best-known horse breeders and stud farm owners in West Tennessee.
Killing a human being brings the wrath of the law and the accompanying sorrow and grief from loved ones. Killing a helpless animal brings wrath that is unequaled to that associated with killing a person. This sorrow and grief continue long after the grief over human loss has left. Mankind will forget their own losses, but they never forget similar betrayals to animals. Odd isn’t it?
The fire had, obviously, been set and was a deliberate murder of innocent animals – horses. Horses, that could not free themselves from their comfortable stable, horses that trusted their caregiver and felt safe in their home. Horses that died a terrible death, and horses that would never know how they became involved in such a terrible scheme and plan.
Tracks revealed that many of the doomed horses had been led from another barn to the one that was burned. This made it more than an act of revenge or rage, but one intended to destroy the animals, all at once, and all at one time.
Other than car and horse tracks, the clues were minimal or non-existent. Police roped off the area and considered it an accident or a rival/revenge act until they found the body. Then things changed.
He had been shot once at close range with a high powered rifle. The bullet entered his center chest and exited to some unknown parts of the barn or maybe the surrounding ground. His body was burned beyond normal recognition, like the horses, but his engraved Horseshoe ring, which he always wore proudly on his right-hand ring finger, made preliminary identification possible.

Felt Right at Home at the Peabody!

‘Murder My Darling,’ Book 17, and the third Carson Reno novel I’ve read—delivers the goods! In this case author Marlow Darling’s tell-all diary. Important enough to get her murdered, and detective Carson Reno implicated in hers and that of the boat captain of ‘The Lusty Lady’.

A fan of Reno and the early Sixties from which he operates the Drake Detective Agency on the first floor of the Peabody Hotel, I loved tooling around with him, Joe, and Lydia. Whether they’re contemplating their next moves at the Down Under or following up a lead at Chief’s Motel, it’s a wild-goose chase to find the bad guys amongst a motley assortment of characters with creative names such as Lefty Thenwright, Ben Dover, Three Smith, and Primo Pitt.

Even though Carson Reno has only 48 hours to clear his name of murder, he’s the same ‘ol: cynical, snarky, irreverent, and chauvinistic. Leave it to him to stare at Flo’s assets while on duty at Chief’s, wearing her traditional, pink uniform with fake handkerchiefs on the upper left shoulder.

If you like your Crime/ Mystery, Thriller & Suspense stories hard-boiled—any one of the stand-alone Carson Reno books will tickle your fancy: Fast-paced plots, sinister twists, suspicious characters, snappy dialogue, and time-warped technology and attitudes. I guarantee you’ll feel right at home at the Peabody.
