Author Darnell pulled me right in from the prologue and made me sit in the lobby of The Peabody Hotel.

This was my first Carson Reno detective novel, and I’m now a fan. A detective story that weaves its way through magnificently described settings; Memphis, Tennessee, in the 1960’s, and characters that come to life, in front of you. Darnell’s ability to described and develop his cast of players is marvelous. I got to know his main character, Carson Reno, as he, in the first person, tells the story, and lets me know his feelings and thoughts, in his own irreverent way. From the prologue, I felt as if, Author Darnell, had pulled me in by my shirt collar, into The Peabody Hotel’s lobby, where Carson has his detective office, next to the Down Under Bar. I didn’t have to guess what the characters looked like, no, I could see all of them, their quirks and mannerisms. The murder plot (or murders), is very intriguing, twist and turns, clues everywhere, multiple suspects— that make the amateur detective in all of us, ‘sleuth’ our way through the book. If you enjoy a detective –whodunit novel, you’ll enjoy this one. “Another Jack Daniels and Coke please, Andy,” said Reno.

Wow! What a great read. “Dead End,” throws the reader back in time to the 1960s to follow the wild and unpredictable adventures of Carson Reno, private detective. Through a complex and exciting story, Gerald W. Darnell manages to illuminate the debaucherous cunning of classic gangsters as well as the dedicated heroics of the people hired to catch these crooks. The opening is enthralling, and the ending is unforgettable; definitely grab a copy today.
Darnell also asserts the fact that his Carnon Reno books are all PG rated, so feel free to pass them on to the young ones.

Highlights!

Chase scenes: there are too few car chases in thrillers these days, but “Dead End,” delivers all the twisted metal and nervous speed you can handle.

Side characters: the extra folks in this book are multifaceted and compelling.

Series: this seems like a strange positive note, but “Dead End,” is the thirteenth book in the “Carson Reno,” series. Thirteen novels and still awesome is a massive achievement.

Murder in humboldt.jpg

Line Blurb
Set in the sixties, Carson Reno is the owner of the Drake Detective Agency in Memphis. When asked to investigate what might be infidelity by a wife who thinks she is hiring a stranger, he ends up implicated in the murder of JR Maxwell in his own hometown. Two thugs (Bubba and Bobby) try to convince him to keep his distance while the police chief insists he return to Humboldt to answer some questions. Of course, there are some lovely ladies to provide some distraction, as well as Carson’s friends at Chiefs and the Starlight to provide support and libation. The union shut down at the textile mill, the trucks not allowed to leave, and the questionable meetings of JR, especially with General Samson and Judy Strong, give the story added dimension.
Having come of age in the sixties, the classic cars and social norms depicted by Darnell held a touch of nostalgia. The characters seemed to fit the times. The plot was easy to follow, but JR’s murderer and the motive weren’t obvious until the end. Fans of Perry Mason, Mike Hammer, Donald Lam and others from that era will like Carson Reno for sure. This is the first in the Carson Reno series, the 12th (Justifiable Homicide) was published in October 2014.

An ex-Memphis cop and a friend of Carson is in trouble – but what kind of trouble?
While trying to answer that question, Carson finds more questions – and all with no answers.
What Carson also finds is trouble coming from all directions. The Mafia, the Teamsters Union, an unhappy sheriff and some very rough characters are all looking for his friend, and Carson is in the middle of this mess.
An apparently senseless murder only complicates Carson’s problems, which makes getting to the truth more difficult.

1941 Plymouth Pick-up!

Reelfoot by Gerald Darnell is my first Carson Reno mystery. I loved it! I found the style of writing mixed in with the little black and white pictures captivating, like the 1941 Plymouth Pick-up truck. I have been to Memphis and other areas in the south and found the descriptions so real. Also, I like learning when I read and Darnell mixes local history into the story. I definitely will be reading more Carson Reno mysteries.

The year is 1962 and Carson Reno, once again, gets himself into situations that would be better left alone. A Memphis client hires Carson to prove infidelity, but instead he finds corruption and murder going all the way to the top of Memphis politics. A Jack Logan client investigation takes him back to Humboldt looking into automobile fraud, which lands him smack in the middle of a murder. Not just any murder, but the murder of a local beauty queen – one who seemed to have too many enemies for a girl her age.

A small town in the 1960’s must deal with some big time crime. Written and delivered in the fashion of Sam Spade and Phillip Marlowe, the author magically transports the reader back in time – a time that should be simplier, but isn’t. A tough Private Detective uses his muscle and humor to sort through clues and resolve a complicated murder. This is a Classic Carson Reno Mystery with all the usual characters and compelling conversations for the reader. Light illustrations help tell the story and complete the reader’s transition back in time.

They’re not just killing people, they’re removing the victim’s fingers and leaving strange clues everywhere. Carson becomes involved when the killer sends him severed thumbs – each wrapped in bloodstained paper containing Bible scripture.
Clues are everywhere, but none of them make any sense and aren’t connected – yet.
Old names surface and the mystery gets stranger and darker as Carson tries to solve the ‘Fingerprint Murders’.

Fantastic book by Gerald W. Darnell!

I think of all the books I have read by Darnell this one was the best!
The twists and turns in it kept me on the edge of my seat. Carson Reno had a real mystery when the dismembered thumbs did not match the bodies. Moreover, the end was remarkable.
I highly recommend this book to everyone!
