The witness protection program had simply not worked as promised. He and his wife had been relocated to a one-horse hick town in West Tennessee, with a promise to start life over – on the right side of the law, this time.
His factory job lasted less than a year. A strike and major labor dispute had cost him his job – and his running around with other women had cost him his wife. He never intended for any of this to happen, but it seemed he was meeting failure at every turn. He had made that difficult move from the underworld to the real world with all good intentions of making it stick – it wasn’t working. Things were dragging him back, and he was finding it too easy to drift into the dark side of life once again.
He knew that if he crossed back over, all chances and opportunity for a life in the real world were over – his one chance gone forever. While he resisted, it just didn’t seem to matter – circumstances were taking him back – he couldn’t stop himself.
He started by renewing some old contacts, asking the right questions and finally by offering his services for hire. It didn’t take long for things to happen, and contract offers coming his way.
They started with a call from Anthony ‘Tony’ Scarsetti. He had worked for Tony in the past, and he believed they held a mutual respect for each other – him for his skills and Tony for his leadership. Tony was a rival of Steve Carrollton, and their competition for the vices in Memphis and on Beale Street was well known. Evidently, Carrollton had been temporarily sidelined – but his operations continued. Tony was looking for some professional help to make his temporary situation a permanent one.
Once again in his life, things were looking up, and he was feeling good about himself – being useful. His skills were needed, and he would again be a contributor. His little house on Mullins Avenue, in this hick town of Humboldt, would also be useful. Quiet, out of the main activity in Memphis, and allowing him to operate under the radar. Besides, the government had bought it, why not put it to good use?
He would start by sharpening the skills that had once made him successful. After all, failure was not an option in this business – only death. Hours in the local forests and woods would give him the privacy required – he had the perfect set-up and the perfect location. Nobody local to challenge him, and besides, if someone did – he was still the best at what he did. Everybody knew that.

Well written and fun to read.

As a native of the real town that is the setting for most of the Carson Reno adventures, I probably get more involved than the casual reader of mysteries. But, aside from being able to actually remember the locations in the book, the stories are logically devised and well written. Carson, as chronicled by Gerald, is fun to follow.

Wow! What a great read. “Dead End,” throws the reader back in time to the 1960s to follow the wild and unpredictable adventures of Carson Reno, private detective. Through a complex and exciting story, Gerald W. Darnell manages to illuminate the debaucherous cunning of classic gangsters as well as the dedicated heroics of the people hired to catch these crooks. The opening is enthralling, and the ending is unforgettable; definitely grab a copy today.
Darnell also asserts the fact that his Carnon Reno books are all PG rated, so feel free to pass them on to the young ones.
Highlights!
Chase scenes: there are too few car chases in thrillers these days, but “Dead End,” delivers all the twisted metal and nervous speed you can handle.
Side characters: the extra folks in this book are multifaceted and compelling.
Series: this seems like a strange positive note, but “Dead End,” is the thirteenth book in the “Carson Reno,” series. Thirteen novels and still awesome is a massive achievement.

The year is 1962 and this small west Tennessee town has been turned upside down by a labor strike at its main manufacturing plant. It seems that, as result of the strike, some very serious underworld crime problems have surfaced in Humboldt. A small town sheriff and small town Chief of Police have their hands full dealing with the strike – when the worst happens – one of the principal figures surrounding the labor problems is murdered.
Carson Reno is very familiar with Humboldt – after all, he grew up and went to high school there. But Carson has a successful private investigation business in Memphis and no desire or reason to get involved. However, circumstances pull him into the turmoil and a situation that grows more dangerous everyday. By trying to not become involved, he becomes deeply involved and ultimately the prime suspect for the Murder in Humboldt.

I really enjoyed the way Darnell handled the period structure of the story. He introduced enough examples of contemporary sights, events, and cultural facts to make the reader feel that she was back there in the time and place he presented. I look forward to the next book in the Carson Reno series.

An ex-Memphis cop and a friend of Carson is in trouble – but what kind of trouble?
While trying to answer that question, Carson finds more questions – and all with no answers.
What Carson also finds is trouble coming from all directions. The Mafia, the Teamsters Union, an unhappy sheriff and some very rough characters are all looking for his friend, and Carson is in the middle of this mess.
An apparently senseless murder only complicates Carson’s problems, which makes getting to the truth more difficult.

A Fresh YA Mystery!

Carson is in the middle of all kinds of trouble as he grapples with a senseless murder.

This is the first Gerald Darnell book I have ever read. With the kiddies out of school for the summer, I have been looking for creative YA books and this definitely made the list.

Reelfoot would appeal to mystery fans and probably any young adult who burns through Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys!

This was the first time I read one of Mr. Carson Reno, a private detective’s, adventures and I couldn’t put it down. I am more of a romance/fantasy reader myself, but the story is so well-developed that it caught my attention right from the beginning (the prologue) when the murder of a crime/mystery author takes place as soon as she types the last words to her newest manuscript and in the cabin of her boat. I must say that I didn’t find it clichè, but pretty poetic. Soon after, Mr. Reno takes the scene and, without having any recollection of his last hours or events and plus being unfortunate enough to have been in the wrong place at the wrong time, he receives the honor of becoming the prime suspect in Darling’s murder (the boat’s Capitan murder being added to his charges just as well).

“It’s not whiskey it’s Scotch, and you know how I hate that stuff. I wasn’t drinking… somebody hit me over the head and…and I guess used my gun to shoot…shoot whoever. I suppose somewhere in the process they poured a bottle of Scotch over me and put my handcuffs on the dead woman. I have no idea – I don’t know any more than what I’ve already told you.”

As you can see, that doesn’t sound promising to help the detective.

Severed Finger!

The Black and White pictures mixed in with the story is classic! The Jack Daniels, the butcher knife, and the severed finger. Darnell’s style of writing, along with the sparse photos, paints a vivid picture in my mind and keeps me turning the pages. I’ve read one Carson Reno book before this and have to admit I am hooked. I don’t think Gerald Darnell can top this Reno Carson story. If you are going to read a Reno Carson, this is the one!

Nathan Battle & Susan Battle (wife) like most couples were fighting over money

By Tony Parsons

1962, Memphis, TN. Nathan Battle & Susan Battle (wife) like most couples were fighting over money.
Nathan decided to not go to their apartment (1611 Summer Ave., # 12), but instead, go visit his brother Evan Battle (Brown-Thompson shoe factory) in Humboldt.

At the Hatchie River bridge (Highway 70/79) Nathan spied a car that had crashed.
A confrontation with the incoherent man didn’t end well.
Beside him lay a briefcase crammed full of $500,000 worth of cash.
Tom Longwood & Frankie Longwood ran an illegal operation (cards, booze, prostitutes) out of the Humboldt Motel (Sunset 4; Capital Loan & Pawn, Memphis mafia).
Joey ‘get outta’ town’ Moretti (Memphis Mafia, former NY Gambino family) would frequent the place.

Sergeant Jordan Helms (TN. Highway Patrol) stopped to talk with Nathan & check out the wreck.
Nathan made it to Evan’s place said hi to Cassidy Moon (Evan’s GF).
Nathan & Evan went to Chiefs Motel & Restaurant to have a beer & talk.
Deputy Sheriff Jimmy McElroy, Sheriff Trent Lowery (Haywood Co.), & Captain Chip Falstaff (TN. Highway Patrol) arrive at the accident scene.
Sergeant Helms & Riley Manning (Lexington, KT.) had been murdered.
Joey showed up at Evan’s house & that did not go as planned.

He had been shot by Titus Dunwoody.
Joey called Guido Carbone (BMF, Memphis Mafia)
Sheriff Leroy Epsee (Gibson Co.) asked Carson Reno (Drake Detective agency) to help with the murder cases.
Titus pulled into the Harmon’s Creek Country Store parking lot with Nathan, Evan (shot), Sissy Chase (Cassidy’s BFF), & Cassidy.

What happened at Harmon’s Creek fish camp?
Will the murder mysteries get solved & someone brought to justice?
Wow, the priceless antique cars.

I had an MH client who lived in a trailer & a lot that looked just exactly like that 1.
& the 2nd. a trailer as well.

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one. All thoughts & opinions are entirely my own.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. Wow, a very well written crime mystery book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a huge set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great crime mystery movie, or better yet a mini TV series. 1 you won’t want to put down. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.
