“Mags and the AARP Gang is a story about a group of senior citizens who decide to rob a bank” – Mags and the AARP Gang by Nancy Lynn Jarvis

Nancy mags2

Line Blurb

Senior comedy is in the works because Mags and her friends, renegade octogenarians all, will do whatever it takes to save their homes. They’ll even rob Bayside Community Bank, the bank about to foreclose on the mobile home park where they live, so they can pay off their mortgage.

The senior gang has cased the joint, planned carefully, assembled their disguises, rehearsed their every move — so what could possibly go wrong? Plenty.

Some people think they can take advantage of the elderly. They haven’t met Mags and the AARP Gang or they’d know better. Sure, they’re older, but not too old for the adventure of a lifetime or to risk everything for the sake of friendship. Along the way, they have to become senior sleuths and pull off two complicated stings, but it’s all in day’s work in this feel-good senior comedy.

Entertaining and Fun

Mags and the AARP Gang is a story about a group of senior citizens who decide to rob a bank. Before you think these people are addled in the head or bored and just looking for something to do, it was due to desperation.

Mags and her friends live in a trailer court, which is about to be foreclosed on. They have no way of getting together $7,727 that each would have to come up with in order to save their homes. They can’t afford to move to a retirement community and are all self-sufficient and ambulatory enough to take care of themselves. They are not candidates for a nursing home. They have no other way to save their homes (and themselves) except to rob a bank.

We are introduced to the characters as the planning begins. Harvey, the ring-leader has everything planned out, including the getaway car that will be driven by Batty Betty, who has Alzheimer’s Disease and has problems remembering things. This heist was immaculately planned and would have gone off without a hitch, but, as things go, stuff happened.

Mags and Harvey are good friends, so, of course, she was his first choice as an accomplice. Jean is Mag’s best friend and is included. Then we have Larry in his mobility scooter, who is as colorful as a tie-dyed t-shirt. He made me laugh. Everybody did at some point in the story.

The book is a comedy, yet it has some serious undertones. People losing their homes is never a fun thing, but it just seems worse when it happens to the elderly, especially when they have no place else to go. This book addresses a serious issue with a comedic flare.

The story was a fast-mover and entertaining. The characters were well-developed, interesting, and easy to care about. They are smart, convincing, and shrewd. I had to hand it to them for their ingenuity, determination, and spunk. It was easy to be drawn into them and their lives.

The writing was great and the book was well-edited. These things, combined with the tight plot and the great characters, earn it an easy five-star rating.

Great book. I loved it!

“If I had more stars to give, this book would definitely get them.” – Letters to Eula (AGhost Story) by Michael Bussa

Sesame, an old woman in frail health, is trapped in the attic with no explanation. A woman and her two small girls live on the first floor, none of whom pay the old woman any mind. Though she tries calling out, banging on walls, and stomping on the floor, her cries for help go ignored.

If I had more stars to give, this book would definitely get them.

I loved this story. I have read many by this author and have to say this is my favorite. When I read the afterword in the book as the author explained where the story came from, I so wished I had more stars to give. I know that place where this story was found and hope Michael Bussa finds many, many more there. In this well-crafted tale, readers enter the mind of Sesame, an older woman stuck in the upstairs of a home while she wonders what is happening beneath her. What she thinks and feels is expressed in the letters she is writing to her sister Eula. The author twists this story just right and takes readers on a great ride. The feeling in this book is intense and readers can almost feel reality slip away as they become one with this story. Thanks to Michael Bussa who knows how a short story was made to be written

“This book takes an unflinching look at the problematic things we sometimes do in society in pursuit of profits.” – The Nurse Mare’s Tale by Marta Moran Bishop

Marta nurse mare 9-2019
Line Blurb
The Nurse Mare’s Tale is in a way the prequel to Dinky:
The Nurse Mare’s Foal, as it tells the story of Dinky’s mother.
This lovely story is told from the viewpoint of two aging nurse
mares about to give birth, and the trials they go through. It tells
us of Sadie and her friend Nellie and is accompanied with
charming dialogue (both speaking and thinking). The plight of
these animals is described in empathetic detail.
After enduring years of breeding and loss, the older nurse mares
must face the auction with the promise of being slaughtered, as
they have become too old for breeding and thus unable to be
rented out as nurse mares to feed the foals of the high-dollar
mares.
Do they accept their fate, or will there be another ending for the
nurse mares that have given everything and received little in
return?

A Touching, Informative Story Inspiring Change

The Nurse Mare’s Tale is told from the perspective of a horse named Sadie, who is placed in servitude to feed other mare’s horses with her milk. Like many of Marta Moran Bishop’s stories, this book takes an unflinching look at the problematic things we sometimes do in society in pursuit of profits. In this case, it’s the equine industry and the practice of using nurse mares.

Nurse mares are bred for the sole purpose of providing milk to more “desirable” foals, such as racehorse foals. Their own foals are often treated as throwaways in the industry. The industry maintains that the practice is necessary, while equine rights activists condemn the practice. Throwaway foals are sometimes slaughtered, and the mares themselves are often repeatedly re-bred with little opportunity to properly heal. There is a huge profit incentive for thoroughbred farmers to use nurse mares in raising their foals.

Before reading The Nurse Mare’s Tale, I knew a little about the industry and the lengths it goes to in order to maximize profitability, pushing the boundaries of humane animal treatment. Mares are sometimes kept under artificial light 24/7 early in the spring to influence their reproductive cycle, for example. Bishop’s book raised my awareness of issues to a new level, and at times, it was difficult to continue reading for that reason. Horses are sentient beings and treating them as if they aren’t is disturbing.

It’s important reading, however, because it raises awareness of the treatment of these beautiful creatures on whose backs fortunes are made. Awareness of the issues is the first step in cultivating positive change.

Bishop’s book is beautifully written, and she weaves in factual information in such a way that it comes across as a natural narrative. The lessons she presents are artfully delivered through Sadie’s eyes.

Readers who are sensitive to the plight of animals or who want to know more about the horse industry will find this book deeply moving. At times, it is touching, and at other times, it’s sad. Regardless, its message is an important one.

Can Jax save her

I’ve read a few books by L.A.Remenicky and I must say that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed them all. Ms. Remenicky has given us another great story that will suck you in and keep you there from start to finish and then leave you wanting more from this author. Ms.Remenicky has written characters that feel so real that as you read about them you start to feel their pain, and at the same time, you can feel the love that they have for each other. Invisible is Elaine and Jax’s touching story. They both know each other from high school, Elaine is asked to tutor Jax in Geometry, but when he asked her to go out she was so frilled about it. But then she comes home after the date an incident happened with her stepfather Keith, he started to lay into her and poor Elaine ends up being beaten with a baseball bat. And she ends up in the hospital, while Keith is arrested. But when she is released from the hospital she decides that she must disappear, so she changes her name and starts to hide away, because she knows Keith will come after her. It’s been 10years now and poor Elaine is still hiding away, and Jax has joined the police force now. But then one day he’s shot and ends up having to go to a therapist, and to his surprise, the therapist turns out to be Elaine. But soon Elaine finds out that Keith has been released from jail and in no time she knows she must move on. So she and Jax leave to hideout again. Will Keith fine her and Jax, and can Jax protect her from her stepfather for once and for all. This is a touching second chance romance, that has some suspense in the mix of it. I could tell you more about this touching story but that would spoil it for you. I highly recommend that you read this touching story you won’t be disappointed.

An interesting take on a dystopian world that drew me in from the first chapter. The main characters are fleshed out so well that we follow their exploits with great interest. The details we are given about their lives, their thoughts, and their feelings make them real for the reader, and that’s exactly what I look for in a book.
The story itself is complicated but intriguing, keeping me glued to the pages to find out what happens next. I won’t give anything away, but let’s just say that I am rooting for the albino! If Book Two is half as good as this one, it will be a wonderful adventure indeed.

Wow, just wow!!!!!

All I can say is wow! Nothing is so terrible that it can’t get worse! This is the theme that runs through Viral Dawn. Casey, a high school student gets a lesson in this idea when an explosion unleashes a deadly virus into the atmosphere. Her life is on immediate lockdown separated from her family and fighting off zombies!!!! Yes, I said zombies. It will take some serious teamwork from the people she is locked up with to ward off the zombie horde and get to safety. Get ready for action, adventure and get ready to cry a little when things get worse for the group. I really enjoyed this story even though I am not usually a fan of zombie stories. Ms. Lazlow’s storytelling held my interest and made me love the heroes.

Light the fire, grab the cocoa, and get ready for a great read!

Stranded on Vail Mountain is a well-written, gripping, fast-paced novella. I love short reads, especially those which grab the reader by the seat of the pants from the first line to the last – this one delivers! I’ve read this story twice and will read it again. This was my first read of this author’s works. I look forward to reading much more from her. I don’t write reviews often, but some stories are too good not to share.
