An engrossing boxed set
This boxed set sucked me in from the beginning, so of course, I had to read in one sitting. I won’t leave any spoilers, but everyone should read the love story of Charlie and Clarisse. Things aren’t what they seem and we find that out during our reading. I will say I didn’t care for Gous at all, lol. At times these books were emotional, but Samatha Jacobey did an excellent job making us want to read more even when we come to the end.

This is an amazing series.
This is the fifth in a series of books that involves time travel in an unique way. Jennifer uses a bed her mother received to go back in time. In this story she is taken back to Florida where both Native Americans and African American’s were getting terrible treatment by America. The author does a great job taking readers on a journey that combines suspense, romance and a bit of history as they follow along on the journey.

A Touching, Informative Story Inspiring Change
The Nurse Mare’s Tale is told from the perspective of a horse named Sadie, who is placed in servitude to feed other mare’s horses with her milk. Like many of Marta Moran Bishop’s stories, this book takes an unflinching look at the problematic things we sometimes do in society in pursuit of profits. In this case, it’s the equine industry and the practice of using nurse mares.
Nurse mares are bred for the sole purpose of providing milk to more “desirable” foals, such as racehorse foals. Their own foals are often treated as throwaways in the industry. The industry maintains that the practice is necessary, while equine rights activists condemn the practice. Throwaway foals are sometimes slaughtered, and the mares themselves are often repeatedly re-bred with little opportunity to properly heal. There is a huge profit incentive for thoroughbred farmers to use nurse mares in raising their foals.
Before reading The Nurse Mare’s Tale, I knew a little about the industry and the lengths it goes to in order to maximize profitability, pushing the boundaries of humane animal treatment. Mares are sometimes kept under artificial light 24/7 early in the spring to influence their reproductive cycle, for example. Bishop’s book raised my awareness of issues to a new level, and at times, it was difficult to continue reading for that reason. Horses are sentient beings and treating them as if they aren’t is disturbing.
It’s important reading, however, because it raises awareness of the treatment of these beautiful creatures on whose backs fortunes are made. Awareness of the issues is the first step in cultivating positive change.
Bishop’s book is beautifully written, and she weaves in factual information in such a way that it comes across as a natural narrative. The lessons she presents are artfully delivered through Sadie’s eyes.
Readers who are sensitive to the plight of animals or who want to know more about the horse industry will find this book deeply moving. At times, it is touching, and at other times, it’s sad. Regardless, its message is an important one.

Spooky and impossible to put down
I have to start by saying that this book was a pleasure to read. It is also the first that I have read by L.A. Remenicky. That being said, I found her characters to be real, believable, down to earth and charming.
Cassie is a woman who has never felt “right” in her own skin and things start to happen that make absolutely no sense at all. First, her parents are killed leaving her orphaned and alone with her grandmother. Then her grandmother dies in a mysterious way leaving Cassie the sole heir of the house she grew up in and her grandmother’s book store. All places that mean a great deal to her, but somehow host something out to get her.
Logan is a new cop who just happens to meet Cassie in typical cop fashion…she gets a speeding ticket. He has no knowledge that his boss, the sheriff, is also Cassie’s best friend and the closest thing to a relative she has now. Logan is immediately drawn to Cassie and it slowly reveals itself in a haunting and highly anticipated way. Logan was sent to save Cassie from the demon entity that inhabited a “friend” from her parents’ past. Spooky, right? I thought so too. How do you fight a demon? How do you hold onto the love of your life and the warmth of the past? What happens when that demon is dead set on destroying not only you but everything you thought you could ever want? Cassie knows

Great start to the series.
This was a really fun and fast read. It kept me hooked and not wanting to stop until the end. It does start off slow but the authors building a lot of backstories which is really nice. A lot of reviews are saying its too short but that really isn’t the problem. Its the first book in the series and it’s over 200 pages. The problem is you get to the end of this one and you want book 2 so you can know what happens next.
The character building in this story is amazing. You really get to know Casey and feel for her. I would definitely recommend this for anyone who’s a fan of zombie novels. YA or not its a great story. I cant wait to see where the rest of the series goes.
