Well-researched, excellent read. ARC (Reviewed for Romance Reviews Magazine UK)
By Francine Howarthon
Life in a Harem and the practices defined as part of life within a Sultan’s palace is unacceptable and sexist for 21st-century thinking. Thus the era in which Joanna Thomson’s novel is set, it is nonetheless a safer place than most for those sold into slavery, and a strict hierarchy exists, and woe betides anyone who breaks the rules. Strange as it may seem, women within Harems of the Ottoman Empire stretching to the Barbary Coast, had more rights and power than most European women had within marriages, so sayeth the renowned English aristocrat Lady Mary Wortley-Montague, who stated in one of her 18th century letters: “The Turks govern their country and their wives govern them. In no other country do women enjoy themselves as much.”

Be assured the author has researched her subject matter in depth, right down to names for individual items of clothing worn by women of the Harem, and of a south sea island maiden, though the true heritage of Sarah and the colour of her hair sets her apart from other women, just it had for another who arrived at the Harem and is thus presented to Naa’il Dhar. Throughout the beginning of the novel two stories of two women run parallel and finally merge as one, and yet neither woman meets the other. Whilst Naa’il is the central pin in their respective stories aside from the swashbuckling hero Hassan, Naa’il is a man of his time and his religion, wealthy and powerful, and yet his faith is tested, just as the hero’s faith and belief he can rescue the woman he loves is tested.

Hassan Aziz’s existence as a Barbary pirate is key to knowledge in how to achieve his aims, but the fact he is not what he seems is also reliant on the betrayal of those closest to Naa’il. This is a fascinating novel of south sea island innocence, treachery, lust, and love, the kind of love that comes once in a lifetime if a man is lucky, and both Naa’il and Hassan are driven to acts that astound both in their own way because of two women. So alike is Sarah to Cora, an American captive; Naa’il’s conscience plagues him for his unjust treatment of both women who refuse to submit and embrace his religious dictate. Although I mention love and lust, this is a historical novel combined with romance, and the novel is not a steamy read in the vein of eroticism. The characters are well-rounded, their faults exposed, and the punishment of slaves and concubines, or favoured wives who deceive, can be realistically harsh. All told this is an enlightening read with hints at how one person’s religion can give cause for another to doubt their own.

“Wonderful fiction which will take you immediately into another mysterious world!” – “The Choosing” (The Memory Keepers) by Marta Moran Bishop

Marta the choosing with blurb.jpg
5-star reviewLeyla Atke
Wonderful fiction which will take you immediately into another mysterious world!
The Choosing by Marta Moran Bishop is an amazing fiction describing the ancient culture and customs of a fictional tribe.
The main character is a young woman named Mondoani elected by gods to be an apprentice of Old Mother, who was the memory keeper of the tribe. Foreseeing the imminent end, Old Mother hurry to make Mondoani the new memory keeper, who will protect the tribe and provide it with a safe and happy existence.
To do this, they go into a long and arduous journey together with the tribe to implement the transfer of power ceremony at the designated location.
The story takes place in the background of beautiful descriptions of ancient customs and culture of the tribe, which worships many gods.
Upon arrival at the designated place, Old Mother falls into a trance to make the transfer of the power to Mondoani. Unfortunately, Old Mother will never come out of this trance, which became the last one in her deserved life. Mondoani becomes the new memory keeper of the tribe, who should lead it and protect against adversity, asking gods about welfare.
Becoming the new memory keeper, Mondoani herself begins to worry about how to find a new apprentice. Looking for a new apprentice, Mondoani regrettably realizes that she will take away the daughter from her mother, and deprive her of happiness to have children and normal life. She also understands perfectly the state of the unfortunate mother. Mondoani begins to bother when she realizes that the choice could fall on beautiful Ashtra, daughter of Naomi.
When it comes to action, Sky Spirit and Spider-Woman make a much unexpected choice: they choose Towandiaka on the one hand, and on the other Ashtra. Then they bring them together and announce them bonded in holy matrimony not only in this life but also in the next! This will, of course, allow them to have children and be happy parents.
This moment, emotionally described by Marta, made me so happy that I felt radiating myself. The gods then chose not one but two young women who have become Mondoani’s apprentices.
The book gave me great pleasure not only because of the perfect plot but also because of the wonderful and realistic description of the culture and customs of the ancient tribe. I had the feeling that Marta may witness it herself in some mysterious way. It will remain a mystery to me forever. Reading the book, I felt I’m where.
The Choosing by Marta Moran Bishop is a special tribute to the culture and traditions of our ancestors, it teaches us to live in peace and harmony with nature and respect each other. Highly recommended!

Angelically Written!!!
By Gladys #XOXOtheNerdGirl

In the same vein as Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunter Series and Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed Series, TW Knight’s book His Soul to Keep captures the interest of lovers of all things paranormal. Including me!!!

One would think that this has been done numerous times before, but Knight was able to create characters with emotions so deep and a fight so life-like that you were nothing less than engrossed from page one. In this first book of the series, Rail and Cassidy are bound to each other in the middle of a demonic war on earth. Cassidy isn’t ready for the unbelievable factor, but Rail isn’t any more ready for love.

Is it because their souls are bound or is it truly something more!! Grab this book today, and you are in luck as book two is available as well.

5 Stars and a tip of my Nerd Girl Hat.

A complex plot, sprinkled with romance and loaded with southern charm!
By Wayne A. D. Kerr
I received a copy of ‘The Long Road Home’ in exchange for an honest review. Someone wants Kate McClellan dead. There are plenty of suspects: her ex-fiancé, a half-brother she didn’t know of, a family enemy with ties to terrorism, and closer to home, her recently deceased father’s business partners. This book is rich in detail, with twists and turns starting on the first page and continuing throughout.
A complex plot, sprinkled with romance and loaded with southern charm, this book is an entertaining read!

“A beautiful story – an engaging and original concept” – “The Dragon Dreamer” (Book #1) by J.S. Burke

A beautiful story – an engaging and original concept

The Dragon Dreamer by J. S. Burke is definitely NOT just another dragon story. As I began to read, I was confused about how a dragon and an octopus could become friends. By the end of the first chapter, I had taken the bait and was hooked. The storyline is creative and original, a fantasy tale with similarities to real life. The book is a beautiful story, a fun, whimsical read and a smart read all in one, not easy to accomplish. It is appropriate for all ages, including adults.

Arak is a young dragon who feels different from the rest of his clan and is teased for his unique gift. Through an accident, Arak encounters Scree, a wise and open-minded octopus, and the healer for her pod. They learn to communicate with body and sign language and become friends, and soon clan and pod are interacting, trading goods, exchanging stories, learning about another culture, and building many more friendships. The pod, clan, and individuals of each experience various issues. First, as mentioned, are Arak’s feelings about being different, and how he handles the teasing and bullying from other dragons. Second are the interactions between two very different cultures (“sky swimmers” vs. ocean dwellers) who learn that they aren’t so different at all. Additionally, Arak has begun to develop feelings for Zarina, someone he’s always been friends with but who is now a dragon-lady. I was pleased to see this in the book, as I feel that it is beneficial to be friends before growing a relationship.

Each culture has their issues to contend with at home. The dragons suffer a severe health issue, and Arak is desperate to find a solution. The octopi pod endure an attack which provides Scree with a unique opportunity to put her talents and personality to an all-new, extremely dangerous, test.

Soulful

This short story captured me right away. The author takes a strong tree like the cedar and adds a soul to it. I could feel its struggles with the seasons, its triumphs over seasons like it’s human. Highly recommended.

“AMAZING- LOVED every minute of this book!” – “Eve of Destruction” (Soldiers of Destruction Series, Book 1) by E. Kay Sims

E Kay eve of destruction (2)#EKsSpecialOps
I’m Capt. Eve Stone and I’m a cyborg. I woke up in a top-secret lab with no memory of my past, except that I was once human. They erased my memory, more than once. I’m more machine than human now, but once my sleep cycle begins, my memories from my human life return, and so do those of a man with stormy silver eyes. He haunts my dreams, and something in me knows he’s the key to my human identity. I need to remember…
I’m SSgt Wyatt Powell, former USAF Military Training Instructor at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX. I met and fell in love with Airman Katica Hajek nineteen years ago. A relationship between us was against the rules. But she agreed to explore our explosive relationship anyway. I thought I lost her but now I am not so sure.
Eve of Destruction is Book One of the Soldiers of Destruction Series and ends on a cliffhanger.

“Darnell never disappoints!”– “the Crossing” (Carson Reno Mystery, book 5) by Gerald W. Darnell

Ger the crossing with review.png
All Carson Reno Mystery Series Books are standalone novels. It is not necessary to read them in any particular order.
The racial problems of 1962 have found their way to the small West Tennessee town of Humboldt. A white woman has been brutally murdered, and one of Carson’s childhood friends has been accused of the crime. Carson’s friend is a colored man who once worked for his grandfather, but the accusations and problems extend beyond the crime and to the heart of this small community.
Carson finds a divided town; a town divided along the lines of race and the interference of outside groups, which makes this division even wider.
Challenged with defending his friend, Carson must find a solution before the two sides collide, which would definitely have devastating results.
Join Carson, as he faces one of his toughest challenges in ‘the Crossing.’

Darnell never disappoints!

This is another fantastic book by Darnell!
I love Carson Reno and the characters who are regulars and the ones which are added to each book. They are believable, and you find yourself so engrossed in the book you cannot put it down.
The story is about an African-American man wrongly accused of murder; but Carson Reno, knowing the man, can’t believe he did.
“the Crossing” is an amazing read, and I highly recommend it!
